Arsenal v Swansea City
The Champions got their title defense off to a fine start on the opening day of the season against newly promoted Swansea, who looked short of ideas going forward. Arsenal started well with Schweinsteiger bringing the ball forward and finding Young who sent in a cross that Villa headed past Diego Alves. Arsenal came forward again and this time Silva and Villa combined well before the former fired a shot goalwards with Alves pulling off a good save. The goalkeeper had to do more of that, first tipping over Young's free kick before racing out to stop Villa grabbing his second. Arsenal were in command though and they got a second when Carzola sent Alves into space behind him and the wingers pull back found Villa who fired his second of the match into the corner of the net. Arsenal pushed until the final whistle and they got a third late on when Johnson cut inside his marker and rifled a shot into the top corner.
Arsenal 3-0 Swansea City
Arsenal Scorers: Villa 15, 59, Johnson 84

Arsenal MOTM: David Villa - 8 - With the likes of Rooney, Ronaldo, Hernandez and Dzeko breathing down his neck the spaniard had to prove his worth and did so with a fine display and 2 goals.

Swansea City MOTM: Diego Alves - 7 - New season, new club, same old story for this man. Keeping the score down, he'll be hoping his new side improve quickly

Aston Villa v Manchester City
Aston Villa were looking to stay clear of a relegation this season but a game against last years Champions League finalists wasn't the best game to prove their quality. Man City made a bright start with Ramos bringing the ball forward and firing a shot goalwards that Weidenfeller had to turn behind, the corner was cleared though. Aston Villa had a good chance to take a shock lead when Jovetic cut past his marker and played in Defoe but across came Pique to clear. After that though Man City started to take control and despite some good defending from Villa, City took the lead. Ozil finding Nani outwide and he beat his man for pace before clipping in a cross that Tevez met in front of the defender to glance past the keeper. This seemed to take the confidence out of Villa and from that moment only last ditch tackles and some fine saves kept the game at 1-0. That was until Hernanes played a great ball over the top for Ramos who crossed in and Benzema was there to tap in.
Aston Villa 0-2 Manchester City

Man City Scorers: Tevez 32, Benzema 78,

Aston Villa MOTM: Bruno Alves - 7 - The defender put in a good performance to stop City running away.

Man City MOTM: Sergio Ramos - 8 - Showed a willingness to run in behind throughout and cost a lot of problems.

Birmingham City v Norwich City
Birmingham City got the biggest season of their existence underway against newly promoted Norwich, looking to spoil the party early on. It was Birmingham who started well, using the space well to create chances. Kaka found Gervinho outwide and he ran at Coleman before working himself into space to shoot but he fired straight into the arms of Howard. Birmingham took the lead early on when Robben was allowed to run forward and given the time and space to fire goalwards and it rocketed into the top corner. Birmingham continued to pour the pressure on and it could have been two after a fine passing move gave Eto'o the chance to get his first goal for Birmingham but he fired wide. Norwich slowly worked their way back into the game with Barton playing a long ball forward for Crouch who headed it outwide to Adriano and the Brazillian volleyed high over the bar. Norwich ha started to close things down well and looked a danger on the counter but Birmingham were solid at the back and still had good chances to get a second, Robben taking Heinze a part before crossing for Gervinho who headed over. Both teams managed to remain solid though into half time. The second half started at a high tempo, Norwich came forward first with Gyan playing Coleman into space and his deep cross head to be turned behind for a corner as Norwich looked to spring a surprise. Larsson delivered the corner towards King who headed over. Adriano was starting to cause real problems on the counter, Barton won the ball and found Dzegoev who played a great ball forward to Adriano and he beat Kelly then came inside a played the ball across to Miereles to fire in. Birmingham were now on the back foot with Norwich playing out of their skins, Holt held of a challenge from Vermealen and played the ball to Adriano who curled a shot at goal with Cech making the save. Birmingham started to get back into the rhythm late on though with De Jong winning the ball and finding Abidal coming forward and his deep ball in found Van Persie who headed Birmingham back into the lead. Birmingham continued to work hard and had the third to kill the game off when Ramsey ghosted in behind Larsson and fired the ball past Howard. Birmingham showed they can win without playing at their best which was a problem for them last year, while Norwich showed they had the fight, determination and quality to stay up, there are easier games to come for the canaries.
Birmingham City 3-1 Norwich City
Birmingham Scorers: Robben 10, Van Persie 79, Ramsay 85
Norwich Scorers: Miereles 66,

Birmingham MOTM: Arjen Robben - 7 - The Norwich defence struggled to cope when he was running at the them.

Norwich MOTM: Luiz Adriano - 7 - Used his strength and pace to good effect to cause Kelly a lot of problems.

Blackburn Rovers v Chelsea
New manager Vincent took his Chelsea side to the ground where last years Champions won the league, hoping to lay down a marker. There were 7 changes from the last team under LSTD with Cesar, Kompany, Gustavo, Moutinho, Mata, Sow and Aguero in to make debuts. They started well with Moutinho picking out Marcelo coming forward and putting in a cross that Sow headed just over. Chelsea had started well and forced a good save out of the keeper when Sow managed to get the ball through for Mata who's shot had to be tipped over. The opener came soon after when Gustavo drove forward into space and fired a shot that hit the post and came back out to Aguero who slotted past Malafeev. Chelsea continued to dominate and found themselves two ahead after a good link up between Lahm and Mata gave the german the chance to send in a cross that Sow headed in. Chelsea took their foot of the gas towards the end and finished the game as comfortable 2-0 winners.
Blackburn Rovers 0-2 Chelsea
Blackburn Scorers: --
Chelsea Scorers: Aguero 23, Sow 61,

Blackburn MOTM: Igor Malafeev - 6 - Had to be alert to make some smart saves.

Chelsea MOTM: Moussa Sow - 7 - Made his pressence felt upfront with a good display.

Liverpool v Tottenham Hotspur
A game between two teams under new managers and looking to move up to the next levels. Both teams had, had good preparations towards the end of pre season and it was going to make for a good game. Liverpool started with just Mandanda and Cavani left from last season, while Tottenham had Raul, Adler and Arteta left. Liverpool started well, moving the ball out to the wings quickly and looking to get in behind. The first chance came when Pastore played Sturridge into space outwide and he put a dangerous cross in the Zapata had to head clear. The first save of the match came when Cavani held of a challenge and turned his marker before playing in Pastore who forced a fine save from Adler. Tottenham started to come forward more and had their first chance when Pedro ran at Taiwo and then checked back and played it Raul who flicked the ball over the top for Adriano and his low cross was cleared behind for a corner by Luiz. The teams had gelled well and both were looking strong, the next chance came from the corner with Artetas delivery finding Naldo who headed goalwards with Madanda making the save. Liverpool had the next chance when Costa used his pace to beat the full back and crossed to the far post for Sturridge who thought he'd scored but Adler somehow tipped it away. The opener went to Tottenham to the misery of the Liverpool fans. Maduro winning the ball and firing it forward for Osvaldo who held of Luiz then played it out to Leon who sent the cross and Raul found the space to run into and headed past Mandanda. Liverpool had to step it up and they were almost level on the stroke of half time when Ramires raced forward and slipped in Cavani but under pressure from Zapata he fired wide. Liverpool made an early change in the second half with Isla replacing Alex. It worked well as Liverpool began to love more dangerous down the right, Pastore finding Isla making the run into space and finding Cavani with a low cross and Adler had to tip over. From the corner Liverpool got back level, Pastores ball in attacked well by David Luiz who headed in. Tottenham were still looking dangerous though and Raul again found space in midfield and played in Osvaldo but Ivanovic recovered well to get the ball away from the striker. Both teams made changes with Navas replacing Costa for the homeside and Ben Arfa replacing the excellent Raul for Tottenham. Both teams had chances, Liverpool when sub Navas ran at the defence before playing in Sturridge but the striker ahot wide and then Spurs with Arteta linking well with Osvaldo before forcing a fine save from Mandanda. There were final changes when Lucas Moura came on for Liverpool and Tottemham bringing on Jones who immediately caused problems flicking a long ball from Rodwell down for Ben Arfa but he was well tackled by Isla who broke forward and found Sturridge in space but across came Sandro to clear. The final chance went to Liverpool on the counter, Ramires getting the ball and running past Maduro before finding Lucas making the run and beating Zapata then Naldo and firing past Adler to score and give Liverpool all 3 points. Both teams look well equipped for the season but Liverpool just edged it in LSTDs first game in charge.
Liverpool 2-1 Tottenham Hotspur
Liverpool Scorers: David Luiz 54, Lucas Moura 89
Tottenham Scorers: Raul 36

Liverpool MOTM: Edison Cavani - 7 - The striker linked the play well for Liverpool and forced some good saves.

Tottenham MOTM: Raul Gonzalez - 8 - The veteran striker still showed he has what it takes to cut it at the top with a good performance.
