What else would a team be doing by winning the midfield battle? Winning the midfield battle means nullifying the opposition midfield's threat, allowing yours to play the way you want.

The line up and tactics weren't bad but Newcastle's were suited to their formation and they were a stronger outfit.

Winning the battle does mean stopping the opposition play. Has nothing to do with control.

Why I was talking about Song the one winning the ball, Carrick reading the play.

More annoying that your interpretation of 'winning the midfield battle', overwrites my entire tactics and your understanding of them. But what can you do.

Will tell them to not try and win the midfield battle next time, tell them to let the opposition do as they wish and don't do as I wish and spread the play wide.

Yeah, maybe you should tell them not to so that you don't end up contradicting yourself.

If you can't see the angle that I'm coming from here then you're not going to improve at all.

I can't see your angle to be honest. There is nothing about control.

You are like talking to a brick wall...

The reason you lost is because you lost the midfield battle. That is equally because Newcastle's midfield/tactics were better and because I didn't feel that your set up in midfield was good enough.

If you take nothing else away, at least remember that.

If you'd said that. I would've disagreed personally, but would've been fine.

But you didn't, and clearly didn't read or understand my tactics.

Henderson, Siquiera, Parejo, Pjanic and Strootman is a very energetic midfield. Tranq's formation, I felt, brought the best out of that area of the pitch and would have helped to control it.

All of that still rings true and that is what I originally put. You're trying to contend the entire result off the back of one word.

Not trying to contend the result, was looking for some thought as to why I lost so I know where I can improve.

And those are your thoughts on Newcastle. Your thoughts were that controlling the midfield was a big part of my tactics. Which you've taken that off the back of a couple words. Those were just defensive instructions, and personally was happy as Song has won possession more than anyone bar Matic in the PL, and very close to Matic in that sense. And Carrick reads the play better than anyone in my mind. But obviously if people disagree I need to change my midfield somehow. Wasn't looking to contend the result, was just annoyed at your undestanding, apologies.

Carrick I feel you overrate, if I'm honest. I haven't seen him perform the way you want him to perform for a number of seasons now. Song is fine, I do like him but I reckon you'd be better off with someone other than Carrick partnering him. Maybe someone younger with the energy to push from defence to attack quickly.

I think, more than anything, it's the choice of wording in my explanation that is the problem, there.

Personally think this season highlights Carrick's importance to United massively. Was their worst start to a season ever, he returned and they suddenly went on a winning run. He always has a big effect on the team. And feel what he offers is far more important than energy personally.

But may have to consider playing Herrera.

Herrera is a good option to have. Besic and Inler are also decent options to have. Especially Besic beside Song in a more defensive line up.

Herrera the only option I'll consider really. As everything this season points to Carrick being far better and influential than either.

Will possibly see how Herrera does vs CIty

back up midfield just have to work on a back up striker, guesso Berardi or Vietto will have to do, Wellbeck
