my thoughts on this season

Standard have slipped at United if this is acceptable. That alone is a major part of the problem.

Well considered article Dunc. Truly disappointing end to the season.

Ole is definitely not the man to take us to the next level. He’s shown that time and again in the important one off games. Last night was an appallingly managed game.

Man United is not a club that can afford to have a manager learning on the job. Look at what having proper managers has done for City, Chelsea and Liverpool.

Ole was brought in to stabilise the club over a 5 month period before we got the main bloke in to take us forward. Another Woodward f*ck up.

It must be strange as United fans, you will never have a period in your history again like the Fergie tenure, sure you will have other triumphs but you are extremely unlikely to achieve those consistent levels of success ever again - does it not feel like it is all down hill from here?

OP Blames Rashford for been poor last night. Yet doesn't understand its the coach job to take him out if he is no longer contributing. From the 60 min you could tell Rashford was done.

Ole is still a relatively inexperienced manager and is learning on the job, however to get second and reach a european final ( regardless of which one... some of you may not remember the 91 cup winners cup final... not the premier european trophy but still one that was well celebrated). is nothing to be sniffed at.
-----------------

I don't understand this, he's been managing for 10 years, that's not inexperience. Learning on the job for a club like Utd, and this is his 2nd season. He's not learning if he keeps making the same mistakes over and over again.

I'm not sure what Ole was thinking yesterday, but he's paid good money to make big decisions and yesterday he really messed up, it was so amateurish. I get it he wanted to play his best side or what for the final, and that's fair enough.

But as the game went on, he would have known the players will tire and to make use of the subs, when we equalised, Emre made changes to freshen things up and adjust tactics, after a good 5-10 spell after for us, they got more comfortable as the players tired. Ole should have done the same, whether he trusts the subs or not, fresh legs would have made a different because man for man, we still have better players, letting the players run them selves to the ground was just plain novice error. They aren't robots, players will tire and it showed, as the match went into extra time.

This isn't even the first time Ole has done this, we just got away with it before, but when it mattered, we didn't. Why he kept Rashford on for the whole 120 min is baffling, well actually we know why, he thought he might have one moment of individual brilliance that might win the game, that's the story of our season.

What vision has Ole brought to the club?

He has been here 2.5 years, and we look completely disjointed on the pitch. Just hoping for individual moments.

So what's the vision? What style of football do we play?

I think this is a decent article, dunc, but I'm going to take slight exception with what you said about yesterday's game.

Obviously you have to err on the side of caution against a Villarreal side unbeaten in the competition and a manager who's made 5 finals.

But your squad quality vastly exceeds theirs - by a country mile.

Your manager wasn't proactive enough with his substitutions, your players didn't test the goalkeeper enough and you didn't do enough to stretch them. But ultimately, it was a game you should have won when you look at the comparative resources of the two clubs.

They had a 35-year old Raul Albiol marshalling the defence, and he was barely tested.

Their goalkeeper has shown himself to be quite flappy throughout the campaign, and he was barely tested.

The performance all round from both the manager and players wasn't good enough.

Good article, Dunc, sensible and well argued.

Last night was pretty poor all round, but I'm not for throwing everything out based on a bad game, you've got to keep a bit of perspective.

We need to have the best summer transfer window of the top 6 this summer or we won’t finish top 4 next season.

The standard of football is very poor. Very reactive style of football. Usually Utd start very slow and only wake up when they go a goal down.

It’s a competition we should not of even been in. I still go back to that Fred red card. How the hell did he not sub him? Everyone could see he was going to be send off. But our manager did nothing, Just like he did nothing last night. Honestly it’s utter shocking how poor he is at reading the game.

This sums up how and why Ole is still in the job basically.

I don’t want “Ole out” because generally he’s doing a good job imo. Villareal are a canny, dogged side and managed by someone who in terms of the Europa League, is a genius.

People talk about us dominating and what have you but while we had a lot of the ball, at times, we didn’t create that many actual chances.

Villareal came to nick a goal, defend, and/or take it to penalties and chance it from there and they managed both. Emery’s game-plan was the dominant one during the final, not Ole’s.

completely agree, but as i said, not for the first time this season far too many of the bigger players did not turn up, and if that happens it doesnt matter who you play you are going to struggle

of course i understand its the managers job to take him out... and had someone like martial been fit then the chances are rashford would have been hauled off.

the problem is you take off rashford and bring on james, and an underperforming rashford is more likely to get you a goal than dan james

One thing we didn't need last night to learn is that we're atrocious at breaking down sides that sit deep. I'll be interested to see how that's going to be addressed.

that is absolute rubbish and a straw man arguement.

fred has had 19 yellow cards in 121 games for utd and been sent off once and that was the game against PSG.

there is nothing to suggest that anyone would have known based on this that fred was gonna get a red

do you see every other manager subbing off a player when he picks up a yellow?

of course ya fecking dont otherwise Fergie would have hauled of keane and scholes in 99 and we would never have won the CL

This has literally been an issue with the club for years and Ole hasn’t even addressed it in the 2.5 years he’s been here, when are you expecting him to rectify it?

In fact I’m more surprised that a lot of managers in the PL didn’t play the same way Villarreal did against us yesterday, it’s a bog standard way to stop us from scoring.
