Completely agree. It's not the best European trophy but the second best and a major trophy. The PL and CL are ahead of it but that is all, for me.
I cringe when I see fans of clubs at the end of each season talking about this gives the young players a chance. Yeah you can't even win it with your first team mate, forget the youngsters and show it some respect.
A new competition will always be dismissed did to it’s lack of heritage but you only have to look at the teams competing in the Europa to know it is a major European competition. It doesn’t come with the glitz and glamour of the champions league but it certainly shouldn’t be dismissed

Most spurs fans were desperate to win it?
Uefa Cup is a big part of our history - think most fans respect it even if the Thursdays in Azerbaijan are a chore.
The Europa Conference League on the other hand....
I think it is the CL teams dropping down that really devalues it for many.

It does though. Arsenal have cruised through the group stages every season we have been in it with playing a lot of kids.
Good post op, totally agree the Europa is a great competition and shouldn’t be sniffed at
It's gained a bit more respect since they added a CL spot.
Not a patch on the conference league though. That's the future of european football.

To be fair, the Uefa Cup was treated similar because all the best teams were ending up in the CL. And even when it had good team that Uefa Cup didn’t have the prestige of the other two.
I do agree with the sentiment of the article, though. I like the Europa League. And the CL place has given it added importance.
I agree, the new format next season makes it even better.
For me it's not from an arrogant point of view that I don't like it - it's just so much of a risk putting all of your eggs in the Europa basket.
Rightly or wrongly, the OP is right - CL is treated with much more respect than the Europa. When we're in the CL, I can't wait to watch the group stage draw. Europa? I could care less. If that sounds arrogant then so be it, but that's how it is. And I'm guessing it's similar for a lot of the players.
The second point to make is how much of a toll it takes on your domestic season. If we hadn't been it in this season, I think we'd have been more likely to finish top 4. Arsenal put all their eggs in it, the risk being one (or two) bad performances and you're out, and your season is over, as they experienced.
I'm more worried about them having a good season next season because they're not in it than I would be if they were, and I think West Ham and Leicester will have a drop off in league form next season because they're in it (assuming they get decently far).
Us? Might be controversial, but I'd vote for playing the u18's in the qualifying round of the conference league, narrowly losing, and giving it a good cracking domestically next season. As I said, to me it's common sense that we'd have a better season if we did that.
The Europa would be a much more prestigious and sought after competition if they did not allow CL failures to drop into the KO phase. This farcical rule just devalues the competition and basically rewards failure.
I wonder if the Europa 3rd place teams will also be dropping into the Conference League, to give them a second bite at a smaller cherry.

I understand that and the group stages for the really big sides give that opportunity but certainly you'll not have much chance when you hit the knockout stages. However that's not what I was referring to.
It's a weird one, devalued massively by CL teams dropping into it, the lack of financial clout vs the CL and the fact teams in n England finishing 5th/6th qualify.
The later stages usually involve some decent teams but prior to that it's a walk for sides from major leagues due to the massive differences in club finances across Europe.
Obviously it's amazing for most clubs to win it but the passion of those eventual winners rarely kicks in until the latter stages.
I think it would benefit from the CL being shrunk down so no country can have more than two qualifiers. The top division winner and the national Cup winner (making the national Cup far more important).
*That may not mean the CL involves fewer teams, just an even spread across all leagues.
The new conference league is the reverse of that and further devalues the Europa and itself
EL is not a major trophy. How could it be when non of the teams that win or challenge for their domestic tittle plays in this competition, Unless they screw up CL group stages. FA cup is a more prestigious trophy solely because all the best teams in England participate in it.
I can understand why it can be important to serial trophy dodgers like Spurs and Ole. Non of the top teams gives too sh#ts about it. It’s a second rated trophy for second rated teams.
ironically it was Jose who denigrated the competition most with several terse attacks against the reputation of the trophy.
"No players in my team should wish to play Europa football" he crowed when Benitez won it with Chelsea.
When United won it it became a part of his legacy with the fans and his popularity surged at that moment.
I was waiting to hear his latest comments after being made favourite by the pundits in this years compo, but then Zagreb did him a favour.
Good article loavirgo. The European competitions need to all revert back to their original concepts. Straight draws and knockout from the off. No silly leagues, no country protection, no countries dropping into other competitions. Let`s get them back to what they were supposed to be Cup knockout two legged ties in every round, other than the final.
The money men have ruined football, and the European competitions have been geared so much to favour just a few elite teams.

That`s because our modern fanbase think they are above any being in these competitions, despite most of them ever seeing Spurs win a trophy.
I am lucky, have seen Spurs win every competition, bar the CL (made up for by seeing Spurs win other European competitions), in my lifetime, but I don`t turn up my nose at winning the League Cup or taking this new Conference League seriously. I want Spurs to take every competition they are ever in very, very seriously.
