Turkey are really underrated. Everyone is going for them as a dark horse. Which shows how highly rated they. Making them overrated. Maybe they are just rated at the perfect level.

England looked like Celtic in their friendlies, passing sideways and backwards for most of the game, if they don't change that they can forget it.

We are too pragmatic for the players we have in the side. People bang on about it only being friendlies and what have you, but that's our style of play, it doesn't matter so much about the individuals, that's how Gareth wants us to play.

I actually wouldn't be too surprised to see us not win a game and be dumped out of our group if I'm honest, but then again I probably am being very pessimistic myself and I don't know how good the Czech's are these days really, although I can't imagine they'll be pushovers.

England have very good players I just think the manager wore a cardigan and fooled people
He’s a boring coont

The World Cup semi final masked over where we actually are as a team at the moment.

Winners: Belgium
Dark Horse: Sweden
Flop: Scotland

Spoilt for choice of flops so went for the old reliable!

Sweden regularly tough to beat and do well in tournaments, oldest squad.

Belgium still #1 rank. Much hinges on KdB recovery from injury and form, or lack of it, of Eden Hazard but will go with them as nobody else has - contrarian cvnt Also second oldest squad.

Still wouldn’t write England off
----------------------------------------------------------------------
No I wouldn't either tbh! I know I have just been slagging us off but I also wouldn't be surprised to see us go far in the tournament either because of the players we have. I just don't think we play in the right way.

Love all the analysis stuff and would hope it plays a bigger part in our recruitment - and I not mean available - tick, cheap - tick, think I can out-negotiate a discount with their CEO despite already being cheap - tick

Pasting this article because a) it typifies the approach b) is thought provoking c) bums ups Turnbull and Kamara so appeals to both sides of the divide

Gareth Southgate is the second luckiest manager in world football to get the job he has - behind Big Angie obviously

I think Southgate is Englands biggest weakness. He just isnt qualified for the job IMO. They have a huge amount of talent - probably too much tbh which has made getting a settled team difficult.

I just dont think Southgate has the managerial guile or personality to decide on his best options, mould them into a team and keep all the fringe players that arent getting a game happy.

Southgate is like Chris Coleman - he was a pash club manager before he was an international manager and he will go back to being a pash club manager when his England gig is over.

Then he will take a senior oversight Malky McKay type role within the England set up.

Very true, Hamish. They've gone for the guy that got the highest score in the coaching exam and EQ evaluation rather the guy that can inspire a team to go over and above the tactics or you'd want to hang out with down the pub.

The biggest question mark around Southgate was potentially leaving TAA out of his squad. Ultimately he didn't, even though he has previously, but options like him shouldn't be a question mark. He's the countries best full back and, other than a poor first half of the season, he has been the best full back England have for the best part of 2/3 years now. If you can't fit somebody like that into your system, you're doing it wrong at this level.

When you have a pool of players to select, you choose the one's with the best quality first and then mould them into your system, not the other way around, which is what I think Gareth has been trying to do. That's why I think we will come up short this time.

People say Englands defence is guff but it's the keeper who's a worry

James Stones and Shaw have been brilliant this season

Pickford will throw at least 2 in this tournament

should be going with Henderson or Pope

Aye
A boring coont
If Clarke plays Gilmour, Patterson, and Turnbull we could surprise a few
Not sure he’s that much of a “risk taker “ though
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Genuinely not being 'Rangersy' but its hard to justify putting Turnbull into the starting line up - in reality McTominey or McGinn would need to be dropped.

I will be genuinely astonished if he starts either Gilmour or Patterson.

Normally McGregors experience and recent success would have him starting ahead of Gilmour. The general consensus is that McGregor looks tired and maybe even low on confidence after the events of this season.

I still think Clarke will consider McGregor to be lower risk and wont start the tournament rolling the dice on Gilmour.

For me Patterson is already a couple of levels above ODonnell and is a no brainer. I will be pleased but astonished if Clarke picks Patterson though. Slow and steady ODonnell will get the nod.

TAA might have that accolade but only on a medium term average basis. He is not the form RB and playing form players is also an important consideration. On form he was 4th RB. As much as I dislike Walker.
