Cant they just leave things alone???
You stole my article spot!!!
For once I think they have called something right. The problem with the rule is that if the 1st leg is 1-1 and the second leg 1-1 then the home team in the second leg get an extra 30 mins to score with home field advantage.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
That would be the case anyway.
Go and have a lie down.
Completely agree with this.
In two legged ties, it should be seen as an advantage for a team to have the home leg second. This is why in the CL for example, the team who finished 1st in the group plays a team who finished 2nd in another, and their home leg is always the second leg.
With the away goal rule, I think this advantage was taken away.
For example, in our run to the CL final in 18/19, I was extremely happy to have been drawn against both Man City at home first leg, rather than away first leg.
In both cases, if you reverse the scores that happened, as below, we would have been out:
Man City 0 Tottenham 1
Tottenham 3 Man City 4
Ajax 1 Tottenham 0
Tottenham 3 Ajax 2
In both cases, once we knew that we had restricted City to 0 away goals and Ajax to only one, we knew that we could go away to their places knowing if we scored a couple of goals, they would really be in trouble.
Pros:
Football will be easier to understand
Teams will actually have to win a game to go through
Cons:
Playing at home is an advantage, especially in Europe
First legs are more likely to be boring
This would've made a lot more sense as an experiment during Covid when there's no fans. I reckon it'll change back in a couple of seasons.

Yes but then the away goal rule still applies in extra time, so the away team scoring once in that period is like scoring 2 goals

But they won't have home field advantage like you wrote.
You should not talk about football ever.
Just remove the away goals rule from extra time. Sorted

I'd prefer that I reckon. Away goals was brought in for a reason and it worked. Kind of come full circle now though.

That's exactly what I would've done.
I quite liked the away goal rule otherwise.
More penalty shootouts though now which is good.
Good news. They should scrap extra time now and go straight to pens.
Don't matter when your 2-0 up at halftime to a European minnow, and manage to lose 3-2.
I'm happy enough to see the back of it. The rule was brought in to encourage away teams to attack more, but just as often it leads to the home team defending more for fear of conceding an away goal. With that being the case, I see no point in having a rule that sees a team go through after drawing over 3 hours of football.
