Na not really the same. We are still in the top 10 most successful international countries in the world when it comes to footy and we are spread out across lots of different sports.
When it comes to team sports is there even any other side that has won the cricket, football and rugby World Cup?
Probably more like Leeds, in that we used to be a good side for a while but are just meh these days. Spurs history is more impressive than England’s, whereas Leeds had the odd success but have always been billed as bigger than they actually are.

Bit unfair that one, the decent cricket nations are piish at football

a good analogy Wilko,I'll let you know manana !
I'd say Man City
More often than not get the easy draw and still bottle it when it matters

I don’t think any of the analogies work that well. You’d have to compare England to a team that’s only one the once (or a little in a short period of time) a long time ago

Blackburn.
I think there’s been what 25 euros and world cups since 66.
So thst would take us to about 1996
Yet we still think we are one of the elite.
do we? i'd have said that pre-tournament most england fans had us down as one of a possible 6-10 winners of the tournament, behind france/spain etc, but ahead of sweden/ukraine. does that count as elite?
and by the by, why do people on here spend so much time and effort debating what england "should" be doing, we should win, we should beat x, we should beat y, if we don't beat x it's a disgrace, if we don't get to the final southgate should be shot etc?
doesn't anyone just watch football to enjoy it, to get caught up in the excitement, to have fun? who cares whether we should or shouldn't beat germany tonight, just enjoy the f()cking game, celebrate if we win, smash up some bus stops if we lose.
i get that this is a football site, but still don't understand the pathological need to pick apart our expectations and performances to that degree, it means that some people are never happy - we get to a world cup semi and all some people can say is that "we got an easy draw, and should be beating croatia". terrific fun.

Yep. It seems to be from a lot of outside parties tbh who mistake optimisism for entitlement. I don’t know a single English person who goes into a tournament saying we should win it

Okay then name a country that is successful in 3 different team sports?
There’s only really football, cricket, rugby, basketball, hockey and then silly ones like volleyball and netball.
If you look at individual sports like tennis etc then it gets messy, England have underachieved big time but then look at boxing, formula 1 etc. May as well stick to team sports.
I think you'll get through tonight then get knocked out of Sweden.
It's actually quite surprising how similar your tournament record is to Sweden actually. There's an argument to be made that Sweden are actually your equals in tournament football.

Tbf there’s only been 8 different World Cup Champion teams.
After that, you’ve got a handful of teams which have won the Euros once each, but none of them have won the World Cup. So Eng would still be ahead of them. There’s no teams with 2 or more Euros who aren’t in the 8 WC winners group.
Chile, Paraguay & Peru have won 2 Copa Americas and 0 WCs, so you could have them 8-10. The teams with 1 Copa don’t have a World Cup.
So at worst Eng would be 11th.

When Sweden hosted their own world cup in 58 they go to the final. Unfortunately they lost to an exceptional Brazil team, whereas England were helped to a win on their own pitch.
You've both reached WC semi finals, you've both reached Euro semi finals, and your record against each other is very equal.
