It depends what we were to do with the midfield.
I’d say there’s at least £30m difference in the valuations
Is Pogba in his last year or is there an option of adding another?
If Pogba is going to leave we might have to lower our demands for him if we want to get a half decent fee otherwise clubs will just wait until January when they can sign him on a pre-contract.
It might be better for us to get the best fee we can for him this summer and look to improve the midfield.
Varane to his credit can say he's been in the top 5 in his position over the last 5 years. I'm not sure Pogba can say that despite the ability he has.
We have to judge Pogba over the performances for United not on his 'potential'.
I'd take the swap. We can't fit Pogba into our team and he wants to leave. Varane is a player we've wanted for a while and makes us a lot better.
Don't think Pogba to Madrid is even a possibility though. They can't afford his wages and seem to be trying to get Mbappe.

Hmmm, £60m - £70m maybe? I reckon he'll sign another though.
Although I would like to sign Varane
I honestly haven't a clue what he'll do. Maybe signing Sancho and possibly Varane could convince him to stay.
Part of me thinks he should leave as it's best for him and us but that's in an ideal world where we bring in the right midfielders which is doubtful knowing us.
I'd say there's something in the idea that if we can't get a fee we're 'happy' with and instead would have to accept £40/50, then he's more valuable to just keep. There's always the chance he doesn't sign a new contract, we do our husoenss and are prepared to lose him on a free, but then for him to sign part way through the season.
But I could see us being prepared to lose him on a free if the service in the 12 months is worth more to us than the money we would get now. We can't replace him for that amount, we would have a stronger squad with him in it, so similar to Dortmund with Lewandowski, we may just want the services of the player for a further year than a minimal fee.
I wouldn't swap the 2 either, it swaps one problem for another and leaves us weaker in one area, despite being stronger in another. If Varane is available for around £45 million, then I would prefer we just do that and he lines up with Pogba next season.

If Varene were a 28 year old Rio, Chiellini, VVD etc then yes, I’d probably do it.
But players like Pogba are too few and far between to swim him for a good, but no great CB.

Has he been world class for us in 5 years? He's not even been close for me. He should have been because he's got the ability.
Last 2 seasons alone:
2019/20: 1 goal in 22apps
2020/21: 6 goals in almost 50apps
If that's world class then then the game is gone.
