Has he? I think most expect no less with the tools at his disposal tbh. England finally doing what most expect with the players available. Im happy for him and more than happy with the final even if we lose it. But anything less imo would be disappointing all things considered just like i was with the world cup semi exit.
Progress and if he wins it a legened regardless but not like hes taken scotland to a final is it?
I wonder who wrote this masterpiece less than 3 weeks ago.
Problem is far, far to many caps are given out these days, so when you come to a Tournament, a manager has not got a clue who his best team is, and simply has 30/40 players all of the same standard, put the names in a hat, and just pick out a random team seems to be the way.

Who has been better then? No others have got wins as consistently as him especially in tournaments, despite having good players at their disposal. Southgates group of players aren't as good as the 'golden generation' the likes of Sven and Capello failed with imo.

the bookies are favouring England to qualify at 4/5, with Germany at 10/11. Guess not
We've not exactly been inspirational in our play, but it's more the results and story that have created that amongst the nation rather than our style of play.
In fairness, this is one of the best squads in Europe at the moment and we were 2nd favourites going into the tournament which we have definitely met. So credit where credit is due there for achieving that where previous England managers haven't.
He pretty much has to be based on results. Personally I think he's been such a success because of his:
- Humility: no ego BS and unafraid to admit when he's wrong
- Flexibility: he hasn't stuck to the same rigid scheme, it's more about the best matchup for the team ahead of you
- Squad morale: he's instilled an atmosphere that isn't 'best player plays', instead everyone is valued, treated as humans, and it's more of a 'best players for the game plan' approach.
- Staff: from coaches to analytics he's brought in the right people

Three weeks ago the tournament had barely kicked off. I have been proven wrong, like most others. Southgate is a top notch manager, and hold my hand up to say I got it wrong.
England were very boring in the groups, two goals in three games cannot disguise that, but having growing unbelievably into the Tournament, and Gareth deserves all the praise he gets.
Whoever it was that said we have one of the best squads so he should be achieving couldn’t be more wrong. We’ve got a great bunch of number 10s and wide forwards to choose from but elsewhere we’re weaker than the teams of the past. Yet we’ve conceded one goal in six games and become very difficult to score against. That’s ALL Gareth. He knew we wouldn’t win a thing with a solid foundation and he’s done it. He’s also made some huge calls - Trippier at right back, not starting Grealish despite the entire nation telling him to, Rice and Phillips instead of one more attacking player. He’s made some seriously unpopular calls and he’s got every single one right.
Put simply, without Southgate, we wouldn’t be close to the final.

quite...everyone talking up the squad reels off the names of 6-8 forward players (of whom only 3-4 can play at any one time) but conveniently ignores that we are choosing between pickford and ramsdale at gk, stones/maguire/mings/coady at cb, fat boy shaw at lb, rice/phillips/a crock and a kid in midfield etc
and even some of the forwards have very little top experience, how many cl/international games had saka/grealish/dcl played before this tournament?
Not necessarily true though is it. Our attackers are our strongest area, but that doesn't make everywhere else weak either.
Pickford at International level is one of the best goalkeepers about really, that can't be argued. Our full backs are very strong as well, Shaw/Chilwell for LB and TAA/James/Walker/Trippier for RB. Considering good full backs are hard to come by, that's very strong. Maguire and Stones are both good CB's as well, but we do lack depth in that area. The base of our midfield lacks quality and depth in regards to the rest of our squad, but they do a good enough job to get us by most of the time.

I completely agree. Rather than trying to settle on one shape and shoehorn the best players into it, he's focused on setting up for the team's in front of us - turns out if you prep for a tournament in a flexible way, you can do well!
Also the nonsense arguments like 'well with this squad he SHOULD win'. are ridiculous -
France, Germany, Portugal, Belgium, Spain, and Croatia are all no longer in the competition.

France should have beaten Switzerland, that doesn't mean it's a formality but it also doesn't mean it's nonsense to say they should have beaten them either.
Managed to play dull defensive football with the best attacking team available with home advantage in every game and fairly easy opposition. Par for the course
