Potential Rangers XI

I’m expecting Morelos to be sold. Sakala I think would ease his loss and hopefully give us another top option as think that’s what we were missing. With Roofe up there would be a fluid front 3 I think could work.

Also think Goldson could leave with his contract running down, and think he’d be a huge loss.

I’m not overly excited by Lundstram, Davis should absolutely be ahead of him especially if Kamara does leave. Think Jack or even Arfield are better than Lundstram too, even if you look at Arfield/Lundstrams time in the Prem, but hope I’m wrong.

Goldson would be a huge loss as he has been Mr Dependable for what seems like an eternity. Never misses a match and rarely has a stinker of a game.

The good thing is that we have so many options. The midfield is totally interchangeable - both in formation and personnel.

Lundstram is a good addition - great engine on him and gives us a bit of steel in the middle which was missing when Jacko was out injured. I do have a feeling that Arfield's days are numbered - can see this definitely being his last season.

Yea agree think Lundstram is a great free signing, just not convinced he’s an upgrade on what we have. But absolutely missed Jack so good to have that.

Veerman would be more of an upgrade for me as he’s quite different to our options, maybe most similar to Hagi but that could actually play Cm.

It’s class going into the season with the backup we do. Would like to see Stephen Kelly included in the squad to get some time as looks a player but difficult to see how he gets game time with the strength in depth we now have

It looks like we've been standing firm on transfer values which is a pleasant change from being taken for mugs, but at the same time I think we could regret it if it means we don't shift at least one high value player this summer. Hopefully a case of keeping them for the CL qualifiers then wishing them all the best. Goldson's contract situation must surely be ringing alarm bells.

Veerman is more like hagi than kamara.

Either way would be some coup

I think the really positive thing is the strength and depth now we have. It's as strong as we have been in a long time going in to a new season.

I don't even think we will have a first 11, just loads of options through the season.

Does Roofe not make your first 11?

We need to sell one or two CBs. No point bringing in another unless we sell Goldson (which i would do if he's not going to sign a new deal this summer)

Sell Simpson. failing that Edmundson. No point loaning him out again, should have buyers in the Championship.

Veerman, i've never seen but sounds like a baller. I would be amazed to see us spend 7m on him though. Only way i see that happening is if we sell Kamara and Morelos and think we have Morelos replacement already in the squad.

GK McGregor > McLaughlin > Firth
LB Barasic > Bassey
CB Goldson > Balogun
CB Helander > Katic > Simpson
RB Tavernier > Patterson
CM Kamara > Lundstram > Kelly
CM Davis > Jack
CM Aribo > Arfield
LW Kent > Wright
RW Roofe > Hagi
FW Morelos > Sakala > Itten > Defoe

Sell
CB Edmundson
LW Jones
LW Barker

Loan Out
GK McCrorie
CB King
CB Mayo
CM Ofobohr
LW Middleton
LW Kennedy

Ideally that's what i want to see.

Question marks over the futures of Goldson, Kamara, Morelos. I'm expecting interest in Kent as well.

I’d prefer Simpson to Katic. Think Katic is a fantastic back to the walls cb but not ideal for us in the league, would be happy to see him get a loan and see how we gets on after injury. Then have a youngster as 5th choice

posted on 16/7/21

I think Katic might find it difficult to get back in. Love the big man and as honest and aggressive a centre back as you will find but we have almost surpassed him now.

When Gerrard came in we needed someone no nonsense at the back as we had been soft for too long, but is he better than Helander and Goldson? Answer is no and reality is we are continuing to improve and get better so when one of those moves on we're probably looking at the same level or better to replace them. Unless he improves his use of the ball I don't know where he fits now.

Katic could still develop into a top end English Championship/bottom 6 EPL CB. His biggest issue is he wants to win every ball and gets pulled out of position trying to win headers. That can be coached out of him though.

I would rather keep Katic than Simpson based on what I have seen so far.

Lundstram for me is an excellent signing. He has been playing in the ‘best league in the world’ and was a stand out year 1 in a team that over performed. He’s 27 - so a great age.

I think with SGs guidance and playing in a team that’s mostly on the from foot he can be an upgrade on Jack who always seems very reluctant to have a shot at goal. He improved at that under SG but he’s still well off being a regular goal threat. When fit. Which wasn’t often for Jack last season.

Veerman would be an exciting signing. A CM playmaker with an eye for a goal. Get him signed.

It’s mad in most people’s top teams Roofe doesn’t start. For me (bar Defoe who is realistically a ten minute man this season)Roofe is by far the best finisher at the club. He needs to be kept within the box and the width of the posts. He’s wasted out ride.

Overall the addition of Veerman would be the cherry on top of an excellent squad.

I expect Kamara to go if Veerman comes in. If Morelos goes I am not sure we really need a replacement. If Itten gets a run of games and his confidence up I think he’s capable of hitting a good few goals. He still hasn’t fully settled in and doesn’t look relaxed when he plays.

But there is a player in there 👍

I do feel sorry for Katic - his injury couldn't have come at a worse time what with us improving massively and obviously winning the league. I like his aggressiveness but not sure that fits in with what our style is all about. I would still like to see him go on loan - perhaps with a top 6, English Championship side and see how he gets on.

I'm wasn't convinced on Simpson (I am probably being too harsh as he didn't get too much game time) - perhaps a full pre-season will see a more assured player next season though.

As has been previously mentioned - it is great to have these selection headaches.

Aye the squad is bursting with options.

Goldson and Helander are deffo the first choice duo for now. I think there was real interest in Helander but the fact he never got a sniff at the Euros might have cooled that for now.

There will deffo be players on the way out though so we just need to wait and see how the squad shapes up.

Veerman would be a treat long term replacement for Davis so I hope we get that one done.

I think the criticism of Simpson is very harsh, he hadn’t played much first 6 months of season then came in and only had a handful of games.

Saw in Davis’ first 6 months how poor (by his standards) he was after not playing much, and improved massively last season with a full pre-season. Think Simpson needs to be given time before we judge him.

He seems better on the ball than Katic to me, maybe not any quicker but think for our league games that’s needed.

I do think Lundstram is a great free signing - but seen with Duffy and plenty others that are good in the Prem but struggle here. I mean John Fleck was more of a standout than Lundstram, he doesn’t get a look in for Scotland yet other than McGinn and maybe Gilmour now there’s hardly top top quality there.

Simpson just seems a bit indecisive with his decision make re tackles and distribution. He looks like a well balanced footballer, nice left foot and decent height. He has a lot of the basic attributes to be an upgrade on Katic but he needs to put it all together.

I think Lundstram was at least as good as fleck year 1 in the EPL. I always really liked the look of him. Big, strong, great engine, good range of passing and a bit of a goal threat.

Like a younger Broonie with more (some!) footballing ability. I think Lundstram will be a mainstay in the team.

I agree with a lot of what has been said on Simpson. Good build, quick enough, decent passing but terribly indecisive and for me that's not something you can coach out.

That's just the makeup of the guy imo, he's got mistakes in him and he regularly made stupid decisions luckily not costly ones but he should have been punished more than he was so he has to give us something different coming forward.

Lundstram has to earn his place, he certainly doesnt come in as a guaranteed starter. From what i've seen of him he's less of an enforcer in midfield like Brown and more box to box. Arfield style.

posted on 16/7/21

Agree Simpson has mistakes in him, but I think some those slip ups came down to sharpness and playing in a new team and system. Would rather Katic gets game time anyway, can’t be good coming back from a serious injury to only be backup.

Lundstram was backup in the Championship for Sheffield, and was definitely not as much of a standout as Fleck although he did have a very good season. He used to captain England’s youth sides coming through at Everton too so he’s definitely got pedigree and think he’ll be a very good signing, just not convinced with some of the hype.

posted on 16/7/21

The thing with Simpson is he has been signed on the basis of the player they feel he can be moulded in to rather than who he is right now.

I wouldn't disagree with anyone that he has looked a bit ropey but that was the whole point in pushing to get him in for Jan rather than summer. He's young for a centre back, left sided and physically has all the attributes. If they can work on the technical side he could become a very good centre back.

Can I also add that I think Scott Wright is going to be some player for us - I really do.

Saw enough from him last season to see a great talent. I hope he continues to progress in a similar vein this season.
