He looks an exciting prospect, I’m not hyped simply because our squad is a state and the two payers we actually look like signing are a tricky, attacking prospect and a goalkeeper. If you asked me which types of players we need the least, these are the two types I would say. There are other areas of the squad that need major surgery, and I’d feel a lot happier if I could see us addressing them before throwing our apparently limited funds at young attackers and goalies which to me are way down the list of priorities.

The keeper looks like he's a buy now pay later deal so hopefully not hitting our limited funds.

But i agree, lets spend on a fecking CB and someone to replace Sisokko/Winks

I understand this point, but I also think that buying anyone young for any sort of modest fee (and in this instance also clearing out a player not many are too sad to see go who is almost 30 and constantly injured) is always a good move.

In two years time, this guy could be one of the best young players in our squad at 22. Lightweight European players sometimes don't cut it in the Prem, but then you get a David Silva/Mata who thrives in it. And Sevilla would have a 30 year old Lamela who, if they're lucky, will have managed 30 La Liga appearances by then, and amassed 350 foot rolls that went absolutely nowhere, 2 assists and one goal.

Like I said, buying young is much less of a risk. Dele cost £5 Million, and even now, with his stock having pretty much completely fallen, we could easily get over £20 Million for him. Sessegnon has barely kicked a ball for us in two years, but we could easily make our money back if we wanted to (not that we would, just an example). Even N'Dombele, who has hardly improved here, would fetch back 80% of what we paid for him at least, purely n his potential.

It's the Sissoko's and Vestegaards that we want to avoid. 27+, no resale value if it doesn't work out, which means you're often lumbered with them.

Seems odd he only has 20 odd games for Sevilla and has been loaned out to smaller La Liga teams. He is obviously young, just find it strange a team like Sevilla didn't want to give him more of a chance.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

He's been capped for the senior side too.

Maybe a personality thing.

Definitely something a bit off...why are no other clubs sniffing?

You see when the likes of Leicester pull a Kante from nowhere in the French league Spurs fans are slagging off our recruitment & scouting with20:20 hindsight.

When we pick up a player "no one else is sniffing around" then its clearly because he's a crap player.

You also have to wonder why Sevilla are happy to get the job done now. He's in the Spain squad for the Olympics and any major tournament has the potential to inflate a player's value.

It's a risk I guess but I think all young players are. Maybe there's a tactical rawness to him and he doesn't necessarily pass when he should, not dissimilar to Traore in that respect. Then there's the training attitude. So much stuff we don't see. You'd hope Paratici would have done his homework on this before taking a punt.

Difference is Leicester pull off awesome gems. When was the real proper gem we pulled off ? Young player that turned out to be Great. We don’t pull these deals often Devonshire because our recruitment is usually s**, hence the pessimism

and Mahrez. I guess there's a few gems still knocking about. You're defo right. We can't get suspicious because no one else is sniffing. I guess we should be glad we're seeing them before others are. That's what Paratici is on board for.

I wouldn't pay too much attention to youtube either. So many wannabe pundits giving reviews. I writing an article applying caution to the Doherty signing...

https://www.ja606.co.uk/articles/viewArticle/424898

... and someone maybe in another thread somewhere posted a link to a crazy in depth review of his positioning, strengths and ability on why we'd just signed an absolute baller. I didn't believe it then and I think we can now all agree that it didn't turn out that way. Anyone can spin a story to make it suit their agenda. We're probably signing this guy because £20m plus Lamela is probably a value of around £30m which for a player at 20 years of age probably means he's decent but nothing majorly special. Very rarely do player completely outstrip their initial value.

I’m pretty sure I remember reading an article regarding Sevilla saying they are in a bit of a squeeze financially. If what’s quoted is true they are getting a good deal out of it

I think that the new manager is looking for speed and creativity. Gil was one of those really promising players two or three seasons back. He's been decent but not really taken off like many expected. I think it could be a good move, just depending on how he adapts the the Premier League.

Good to see a new player being mooted, but I can`t see this lad immediately improving our starting XI, he is potential rather than ready made and ready to go.

I would much rather be seeing a RB, CB and CM arriving, which is where our weaknesses lie.

The strangest thing is that Sevilla would want Lamela given he’s so awful.

posted on 20/7/21

I think we all know it's time for Lamela to go, so to use his sale to leverage a deal for a young talent seems like a solid deal.

My concern would be, how does this affect the squad? Is this a move to challenge Son or Reguilon? What does it mean for Sessegnon or Davies? As others have said, I'd rather we spent money in the right places but hey, if there's money then why not.

Kyle Walker £4m
Danny Rose £1.5m
Dele Alli £5m
Son £22m
Modric £15m
Carrick £4.5m
Berbatov £11m
Eriksen £11.5m

We have made plenty of great signings and while not young gems you can add the likes of Toby, Lloris, Vertonghen, Dembele and a good few others to the list of excellent value and quality signings.

Don’t understand why Lamela gets slated so much on here...

Not saying he’s world class, but he’s got a lot a skill & works extremely hard... definitely better than Dele Ali...

Infinitely better than the likes of Aurier, Sanchez, Dier,Winks & Sissoko...

Ok Lamela didn’t realise his full potential, but I thought he was an excellent squad player!!

Why is he always slated??!

posted on 20/7/21

Are we actually paying the money up front? Seems a lot considering. Surely it'd be dependant on milestones being met etc.

Son can play on the right, he scored an immense goal against Chelsea on the right. Gil on the left could add a dimension

I agree.

Always gave everything. HE was a real work horse down the right under Poch and he offered something different to all the other options we have, had the ability to do something remarkable....but just not often enough to make him a regular or a big star
