As for who comes in as test captain i have no idea.No one stands out because no one is a leader another issue.

Love comments like this. I'll criticise from my arm chair but won't even offer a hint of any kind of knowledge around the subject. Just everyone should go if the standards I expect aren't met and the assumption that there must be better available, just because.

And my solution is to re-focus on red ball cricket if that is what the priority is for the ECB. Over the last 5 years plus it has been white ball and we have done pretty well at that haven't we? Unfortunately the test match team has suffered due to that but if we win the T20, I expect the focus to re-shift/
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Definitely, I think if we lose this India series and get a pasting in the Ashes then it should/will bring some change. We generally have to hit rock bottom for things to change.
My main concern is they have put all their eggs in the hundred basket. This tournament along with the blast takes a fair chunk of the summer with prime conditions.
Obviously there's a place for the swinging ball and movement in pitches but until there's a fundamental shift in the way 4 day cricket is played Darren Steven's will be going in his 50s and we'll keep producing batsmen with either quirky techniques or dashers who know there's one with their name on so play far too aggressively.

I feel like the criticism of Root as captain just stems from anger at the team in general. Root isn't a great captain but at the same time, he's not exactly got incredible tools at his disposal. The main issue I had with Root being captain is it would impact his batting but as his batting is as good as it ever has been, that is no longer a concern.
The problem is he's got a mediocre at best batting line up and whilst we have Anderson and a few other decent bowlers who can bail us out every now and then, they can't do it every time, especially when the pitch is flat.
It's very easy to blame Root because he is captain but actually the failings go a lot deeper. If Kohli and Root swapped places in this tour? Would the score be any different? If anything we'd be losing 4-0. However the point is that it's a systemic problem and county cricket needs to change it's approach. There should be less games played from June through August with flatter pitches encouraging opportunities for fast bowlers and spinners. There are so few draws and the amount of games finishing inside 2 or 3 days just isn't going to produce test quality batsmen.
I thought Root was somewhat thrust into the job
..and he struggled for a bit....remains our only WC batsman...we have no other real stayers, and we are so lucky to still have Jimmy...Archer is like a high performance sports car... unreliable
From memory there were 4 candidates at the time he was given the role and that was Stokes, Broad and Anderson.
I think Root like most players, was keen to take on the role and still feels a lot of pride leading the team. Whilst he may not be an inspirational leader, he's leading from the front with the bat and it's up to the rest to join him. In Stokes and Jimmy he's got two brilliant players to support him but we need more than that.

Yeah think the criticism of his captaincy is definitely overstated. He's not a great captain but he's not a bad one either, he's just a bit meh.
I do have a feeling he might step down after the Ashes though, especially if we get absolutely hammered.
Problem is the only real candidates are Burns or Buttler, and both are only a couple of bad series away from being dropped.

Yeah left out Stokes as I don't think they'd want to give him the extra pressure, as rumours are he might not even play again this year.
Even under normal circumstances think it'd be asking too much of him given his workload within the team, but then the ECB never seems to do the smart thing.
Perhaps it's a role that Stokes might be up for doing next summer should Root stand down after the Ashes but it is probably best to plan that he won't.
It's hard to know how much of an impact the captaincy is having on Root but I think whilst he's doing well with the bat, he'll carry on. If he gets a battering in the Ashes though, and the Aussies will be all over him as captain and our best batsman, it could be a tour that he decides he's had enough.

Fewer games played June-August? Presumably you mean fewer white-ball games, because the whole problem is that first-class cricket takes a backseat during those prime months... we need MORE games during the actual summer, rather than during late spring and early autumn when it's so medium-pace-swing-friendly.

Sorry I meant fewer county cricket games in general and they should be played in those summer months. I'd have 3 divisions of 6 so every county plays 10 games in that 13 week-14 week window going into the start of September. It means whilst the summer tests are going on, they'll be plenty of red ball cricket going on.
Fitting in white ball cricket is the problem but there's no reason you can't do a T20 comp in September once the season is over and a 50 over comp in May before the championship begins. It'll never happen though because of the money plus The Hundred ruins that anyway but as the ECB have put a lot in it, maybe run that during July/August as it's only 8 crisp franchises with plenty of internationals.
