I would take tales of Varane’s sharp decline with a dollop of salt. Madrid have been in sharp decline for two or three years. Their midfield offers hardly anything to their defence. Under Zidane, they tried to press high but were usually ineffective at actually winning the ball through their press because of the lack of mobility in midfield. Despite that, they still rather foolishly In my opinion played a high line. That caused nightmares for whoever their holding mid was because they had to cover a huge area, along with Ramos and Varane and ended up constantly having to deal with numerical mismatches.
I don’t see that being a problem at United. We are actually pretty decent in the press due to the way Ole sets us up.
Varane is one of the top 3 CBs in world football. Funny how all of a sudden he joins United and is apparently in decline.
Rather Varane than VVD. He won't be half the player he was.

Big believer in class is permanent myself and feel he is a great signing but there are plenty who watch La Liga more than me who say he is in quite a steep decline.
Must admit it's not often Madrid let quality leave but we will see.

There is no guarantee that Van Djik won't be at the same level he was though either. Right now, I'd still rather Van Djik over Varane regardless of the injury.
I'm not sure he is one of the top 3 CB's in the world right now to be honest.

How have you got Laporte as one of the best 3 CB's in the world yet he didn't even play half a seasons worth of PL games last season and was second fiddle to Stones for the majority of last season?

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Pep always over complicates it in Europe by trying to be too smart. By not playing a holding midfielder in the final, he was asking for his CBs, who both lack pace, to be exposed. What he needed was someone who is quick to sit alongside Dias but he played Stones and if you watch the goal, it's glaringly obvious that a quicker CB would've stopped Havertz scoring.
Like Laporte.
