I'm not sure about Odegaard. His a good footballer, but I dont think he will score enough goals for us. Would definanlty have preferred Maddison

The players we needed in this window were Buendia and Bissouma. We got neither of them.

Odegaard is better and younger with potential than Buendia who no body wanted other than Villa.

Odegaard is younger and more potential than Maddison and cost less.

Buendia got more assists and goals last season than Odegaard has in the past 3 seasons combined. Buendia is two footed whilst Odegaard relies heavily on his left foot. No other team has been in for Odegaard this summer except Arsenal.

Not sure where the "Odegaard is better than Buendia" opinion comes from. Buendia is ever a better player to watch than Odegaard. Not saying Odegaard sucks, but let's be realistic when talking about him. He's decent at this stage. Nothing more.

My goodness. The things people will type out with their own ten fingers about a subject they should know better on.

Ødegaard is an astonishing coup with the potential to be the best in the world in his position. This is our best signing since Alexis Sanchez.

Our best signing since Alexis? I think that's a bit of a stretch.

Arsenal are signing Martin Ødegaard from Real Madrid for a cheaper price than what Villa paid for Emiliano Buendía from Norwich. Brillant work from the club.

I hope Odegaard shows his promise. He was quite underwhelming last season but you can put some of that down to injury and Arteta tactics. Can't quibble about the price for this potential value. Think Edu should be congratulated.

Didn’t ESR and odegaard play together last season a few times? Odegaard 10, and ESR on right or left wing. In that scenario I’d imagine ESR would take Pepe’s place, or mean that auba would only be used as a striker. Also might be some games we can play odegaard as an 8, and ESR as a 10.

Don’t think we can rely on ESR to be the only hub of any creativity all season, so it’s good we have option of rotation or a system when they both play together

He is an ok signing, is still young and shd get better. But he is not the panacea to our maladies, and we have plenty. We had a shambolic pre-season and an equally shambolic start to the season. I've been a staunch defender of Arteta so far but unless he turns our fortunes round soon he has to go. He is clearly running out of ideas in both identifying and fixing the problems in the team.

I agree with every part of that except that "he is an OK signing". He's a masterstroke.

What exactly have you seen in his career to date that makes you believe it's a masterstroke?

It could prove to be in the future, and I think he has potential, but his career so far doesn't suggest it's a sure thing.

He still has a lot to prove.

Everything I've seen him do with my own eyes. Maybe it's a traditionalist approach in the modern era, but I still tend to prioritise what I see a player do over statistical breakdowns when I'm judging one for myself. For me, the difference between someone like Odegaard and Maddison is that the former sees the football pitch, and all the players, in a way the latter simply cannot. I watched a fair few videos of Maddison when it seemed likely we would get him, from highlights to overall match performances (every touch etc) and he seems to play percentage football, but as a creator. He knows that, with his technique, x number of crosses will hit. He knows y number of shots will be on target. Odegaard, to me, seems to have a much more developed footballing brain, capable of knowing not only where all the players are, but where he wants to pull them to. He has exceptional dribbling and passing technique, and I believe he has the kind of quiet bite to him that can make him a talismanic presence in our team. They're huge names to stand him next to, and I only stand his name there on his potential, not current ability, but he's similar to both Bergkamp and Fabregas in that way. He's more of a leader than a lot of people realise.

I agree he has to improve and prove himself, but I back him to do it. I've rarely been so sure of a player. The last time I was this enamoured was probably Griezmann, who we very nearly signed before turning to Alexis Sanchez (Griezmann still has a grudge against us for that one).

I can't say I share your confidence, but I hope you're right. We need this signing to work. Likewise with Ben White.

We are still 1 midfielder short, in my opinion, but there's no chance we'll get another one now.
