In answer to your question: no.
Giving it to a new player just undermines the whole point of the captaincy.
Why not? Maguire was a placeholder until someone with a bit more credibility could be found. We now have Varane and Ronaldo who both fit the bill.

He’s a special case. There’s also plenty of precedent for new players being made captain upon joining a club. Isn’t that exactly how Maguire got the captaincy in the first place?
Two minds on this…I think Ronaldo with his relentless drive would be better than Maguire, but I’m just not sure it would be a great idea to switch it.

Well he was made permanent captain when Young left in January. That was after Ole said he was so impressed with his leadership on and off the pitch. I wouldn’t want Ole to just take it off him.

Could make him club captain? Isn’t that what Klopp did with Gerrard/Henderson? We did it in the past too with Neville.
Pointless, leaders are leaders with or without the armband. No point rocking the boat over something that’s basically superficial
I'm all for Maguire being stripped of the captaincy, Cavani and Greenwood or Rashfird dropped and Bruno being taken off set pieces. It'll do wonders for the dressing room
I did wonder this myself but can't see anything changing. No point rocking the boat. Ronaldo will help the squad by leading by example.
If you've got Maguire, Bruno, Ronaldo and McTominay you've got natural leaders everywhere, I don't think the title of captain's that important.

To win at this level requires every edge you can gain. Being led out by Ronaldo is certainly more impactful on an opponent than having him skulking at the back.
I don't think people really understand what a captain does. So he's the link between players and management/coaching. The one who gets on with everyone, who anyone can go to. The one who looks after new guys, etc.
I suspect Maguire is pretty good at it tbf.
To be fair, it was rumoured Maguire fulfilled that duty admirably during the ESL fiasco.

As Keane has said on numerous occasions, leaders don’t just have to wear an armband.

I'd be happy if I was a Utd fan with the signings and I reckon Ole is pretty good at that, but I also think he's going to have to be.
Ronaldo is a leader with or without the arm band, as is Cavani, Varane, Bruno
Maguire should keep it, he's been good
Ronaldo doesn’t need the armband to be a leader, where as McGuire probably does.
Keeping McGuire as the captain is the best way forward IMO. It allows him to grow into the role while Ronaldo and Varane will take on more leadership responsibilities.
Team needs more than one leader on the pitch, so Having several big personalities in the team has to be a positive. Although I would rather have Bruno as the club captain in the long run.
Was Ronaldo captain of Juve, surely it was/is Chiellini? Just keep Maguire as Captain imo, he’s likely to be here longer than Ronaldo as well.

This.
The armband now is basically an administrative issue - Maguire will be the player the officials go to - and an issue of the wider representation of the club.
You want an intelligent, consistent, cool-headed guy who works and trains hard and behaves off the pitch.
The best argument to take the armband off Maguire, and it isn’t a great one, is last summer’s event in Greece.
Otherwise, he’s as strong a candidate as anyone.

irrelevant really. it's a team game
Under SAF, for example, there were usually ten captains on the pitch (and one uber-captain when Keane was there).
they were most often players with strength of character, a preparedness to take on personal responsibility, the wit to exploit their courage as well as possessing team intelligence.
Only a handful of this current squad have that.
Ronaldo's limited influence will be in individual moments of athleticism and technical intelligence NOT in any great team intelligence - but that's okay he's not there for that reason. He's is no longer a season defining player, and is not going to turn this squad into a league winning one - there are too many weaknesses in shape and in key positions - but he will have some very positive impacts.
