Posturing. They knew Mbappe was not for sale, so it’s smart PR by them to say “Look, we aren’t broke. Honest.”
They know they're most likely losing him for free next summer so all it can be is that they feel having him this season will give them a better chance than ever of winning the CL. Also that money doesn't really effect them worryingly.
Not sure why Real were so desperate, not as if they're competing for the CL with him this season. If I were them just wait and save yourself a load of money which you can use to strengthen elsewhere while also getting Mbappe.
Also if I were Mbappe I'd probably prefer to wait a season. You get 1 season with Messi, great chance at winning the CL then off to Real for a stupid signing on fee.
It seems ridiculous to turn that down on paper, but PSG are hardly short of cash, 200m is probably a drop in the ocean for them.
They'll want to keep hold of him alongside Messi and Neymar to win the CL this season to see if that turns Mbappe's head to change his decision to leave for Real. Doubt it will work though.

Wouldn't PSG call them out and accept the deal, then say to Mbappe "see, they don't really want you that much" when Real backed out?

Real arnt broke. They received more than 70m from sales alone this summer, so they have the money.
It is strange to see them throw 200m on player they can sign for free in 6 months.

Why? Real can sign Mbappe on a pre-contract in January. I’m sure his agent knows the score courtesy of chit chat with Madrid.

Would have been entertaining to watch them backtrack.

They've hardly bought anyone for 2 years, they have money to spend.
Barca's 80mil odd bid for richarlison a few years back is up there.

Because PSG don’t want to sell. They are hopefully of keeping him, and even if they don’t their owners wouldn’t get out of bed for €200m.
I think he's told PSG he wants to leave and that he's always dreamt of playing for Real. He'll just wait and hopefully win a CL in the meantime. It's worrying though that a club don't need to sell for €200m when he'll leave for free a year later.

following the story I understand but clubs were trying to flex on each other. Madrid saying they have the money and not putting a bid unless PSG offered them the player. While PSG made it clear 200 mill was chump change for them
This is the kind of financial recklessness the rst of the footballing world has to compete with
Were there not reports that PSG may have had to sell on one or two players to comply with FFP regulations?
I don't know all of their outgoings and how much they may have needed to generate (or if that story was even true to begin with) but it was something that came about after the Messi saga.
More likely PSG hope to convince Mbappe to stay after 6 months with Messi and Neymar.

when 200 million is concerned and the player has made it clear he wanted to join madrid and for once it is not that madrid can offer him more in wages
the only thing psg is relying on is mbappe suddenly changing his mind. Basically a 200 million gamble that's the definition of financial recklessness. Apply it to any other real life situation and maybe you will see it even clearer
as much as I would like the story to be true
I honestly do not believe madrid had 200million to offer. We all know PSG are stupid rich but madrid have tried to be financially sensible in the last few years. All of a sudden the are offering 200mill for a player the can sign for free in 4 months
Word coming out from Spain is that it was more of a PR stunt from Real to try and distance themselves from the crisis at Barcelona.

And from PSG who want to be seen as a powerhouse what better flex than to have other people circulating stories about how you turned down 200 mil
Barca have had to let Messi go because they can't afford to keep him as there was too much going out on wages, I thought RM were in a similar position - seems not if they're posturing with that wedge

Bit of a sh-t PR stunt. Look at us we've got loads of money, but we're gonna recklessly spend it all on one player who we can get for free next summer. Oh wait they won't sell, guess we just won't bother spending all this money then.
