Fantastic to be in this position after our first innings.
We really do need to push on though and set a decent target. Hopefully Malan and Root can continue there partnership for as long as possible tonight

Just looking at that link. Yes Burns has more ducks than anyone else (more than he should, for sure)
He's also (ignoring Root who has had a ridiculous year and might as well be considered a different species at this point):
- got the joint most 50s of any England player
- the only player besides Root to have scored a ton this year (fingers crossed for Malan tomorrow)
- one of only two players not named Root to have soaked up 1,000 deliveries (more than Sibley in fewer innings)
- got the 5th best average in the side this year, behind Root, Malan, Hameed, Woakes and Buttler - but Hameed and Malan have played half the games and Buttler and Woakes (who has also only played two matches) bat down the order. Granted Burns' average for the year isn't great, but it's a damn site better than the other opening options.
Summary: he's had a shocking match, but the stats don't back up his removal from the team.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Also, I can't read. His average is better than Hameed's.
It’s the shuffling across that I can’t fathom at this level.

Yeah, that's yet another argument in his defence - that ball was an absolute snorter. Getting out to that delivery had nothing to do with his technique.
Not his usual technical flaws, but it was still a batting error. He should have dropped his hands but he followed the ball and ended up looking like he was trying to play some sort of poke to gully, which instead he only managed to poke behind.
There's clearly something wrong with his batting in general at the moment though. When he was given out lbw on nought, he indicated to Hameed that he thought it was sliding down leg. In fact it was going over the top of middle (Harmison raised this point in the interval although I noticed it at the time).
You'll have a tough time convincing me that was a technical error in the 2nd innings. Batsmen with flawless technique will get out to a delivery that spits up off a hard Aussie deck like that. If it had bounced normally he would've been able to play it defensively. The ball kicked up unexpectedly. It happens. Just an excellent delivery. Not every wicket is the batman's fault.
First innings fair enough

Whatever works for him. It is a weird technique but Lara used to do the same thing with his foot movement and it served him ok. It opens up the leg side and to be fair to Burns, I thought he looked pretty decent until he got an unplayable ball in that second innings.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He nearly got bowled leg stump again… got the faintest of touches and got 4 runs.
I like Burns but the shuffling isn’t great. The Aussies dragged him across early in the seconds then targeted leg stump again.

Funny thing is, Burns is normally strongest off his legs precisely because he steps across and opens up the clip through square/midwicket or the leg glance.
He got it wrong one time, fair enough, but it's not like he's constantly being bowled round his legs. Bowled and lbw are well under 30% of his overall test dismissals. Compare that to Bairstow, for whom it's over 45%. And Bairstow doesn't even step across his stumps, which suggests that even if there were a problem (and if it weren't too late in his career to make a makpr technical adjustment like that), then that's not it.

Why? It was a scoring shot if it hadn't bounced higher than it should have.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
How many did he score off it again ?
If he's playing at it, it should be a back foot defensive shot in behind it. Instead he ends up trying to cut it from a few inches outside off stump. It's a nothing shot.

It was short enough that it was very much a scoring shot. It was short and outside off stump. It was a length that players have been scoring off all match on this pitch. The fact it bounced due to the pitch is something that cannot be accounted for.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
it's too close to him to be cutting. much too close.

He wasn't cutting it. He was looking to run it down off the fact of the bat through the gully area.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
like a kind of informal practise session for a formal catching practise session ?
Sounds like a cracking idea in the middle of a test match.
Nothing wrong with the shot he played IMO, he went for a pretty normal shot based on the release of the ball, and the ball kicked up and it was too late to react. Was a cracking ball.
A normal shot for Joe Root on 120 pushing for a declaration with one slip and the field spread, yeah.
