Yawn. It wasn't off the stumps. The ball was short and coming through waist high initially. Shot selection is based off length initially. He could have left it and hindsight is wonderful in cricket but the ball was in a scoring area for him. You can deny that as much as you like but I personally think you're trotting out clichés that you've probably heard from the likes of Boycott and don't have too much actual knowledge.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Maybe Burns said the same to Cummins on his way back to the pavilion, after he'd tried to cut the ball off the stumps !

Seriously though, every school boy knows that length determines whether you play off the front of back foot, but no competent batsman in the world at any level determines their shot selection based solely on length (possibly unless it's a slow long hop), and no successful test match batsman has ever made a habit of cutting off the top of off stump off a world class seam bowler.

Once again, not cutting which is an entirely different shot and brings in a completely different set of issues due to the movement needed to play that shot, where, if the ball is too close you'll either nick off or play on. Burns was looking to play it with soft hands and drop it down to third man. A shot that numerous top players play (that is completely dependant on length) and they play whether they're on zero or a hundred because unless it does get big on you it is a low risk shot.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

You don't play with soft hands with your bat parallel to the ground.

He was playing a run scoring shot off the top of off stump with a horizontal bat. That is why he got out.

He should have either been leaving the ball on length or playing a defensive shot with his bat and body behind the ball. If he had done either of those things he would not have got out.

It's really not difficult.

Yeah, once again, you're wrong. You don't play with soft hands with your bat parallel is a ridiculous thing to say.
Once again in hindsight its easy to say he should have done x and y but the ball was in a scoring area based on length alone.
Like I said, I'd wager money you're of a certain age who still thinks that it's as simple as leaving the ball if it's not hitting the stumps and them waiting for a half volley every 10 overs.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

This world in which a batsman sees the length but has no idea what the line is a complete fantasy.

Regardless, the ball was too straight to cut AND it was too full to cut. His shot was utter garbage.

I am right, and I don't need to explain it again.

It was a actually an attempted late cut off the front foot. Which technically isn't even a shot.

Let alone the fact that it was way too full AND way too straight to (correctly off the back foot) play a late cut.

Looking at it again I think it's actually one of the most incompetent shots I've ever seen a top order international batsman play in 35 years of watching cricket.

He then blamed the pitch as he walked off.

Absolute nonsense. Clearly on the WUM at this point.

Not even on the wum. There's nothing that he did right. The shot he played was the cricketing equivalent of getting out of bed and falling over your own legs. Horrendous.

Pope, Root, Robinson and Woakes got out playing worse shots in the first innings alone.

Malan got out almost identically.

Seriously, watch it again, pause it when he nicks it. It's a foot wide of off and a foot over.

Oh and Malan or Root to fall in the first over. Guarantee

This we can all agree on.

Root....got out playing worse shots in the first innings alone.

Root pushed a little bit too much at an absolute peach whilst attempting to play the correct shot.

Burns decided it was a good moment to try to invent a new sport which was a cross between fishing, fencing and baseball.

It looks wider on the reverse angle, but it hits him on the top hand with his bat almost horizontal.

The middle of his bat is literally 2 foot outside the ball.

please stop. It's embarrassing.

his middle genuinely is 2 foot away from where it hits him.

But you know that at the point it hits him the ball has already deviated to the point where of course he is out of position.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Is Burns incompetent at international level, or were the laws of physics temporarily suspended ?

We may never know.

As I said Root was just trolling on that last delivery

I guess this article may be a bit more lively tonight than just you and me when it gets late Dim Sim.
