Well, it’s like the pointless debates about big toes being the only part offside because you either punish all or none because where do you draw the line - 17,16,15yds? When they overtake the penalty taker? When they’re in the taker’s peripheral vision?

It’s a rule.
Rarely enforced.

As a recent example, Auba's goal against Villa. Emi pushed the ball back out into his path and he scored. A defender knowing their gk has a tendency to parry the ball into a particular area could gain an advantage by encroaching and getting to it first. You have to play to the markings on the pitch so the penalty area is the best way to do it and it works for the area the gk can handle the ball as well.

You also need to look at how it would work if you took the rule away. It may not be perfect but its there for a reason and I challenge you to come up with a reasonable and workable alternative.
