I will report tomorrow morning.
Overall, they stuck the landing. Compared to GoT for instance, this is highly satisfying. I like the fact it basically culminated in a weary compromise between idealists beaten down by reality.
I think it has steadily become a better written and acted show and the last season is arguably its best.
I do feel it lacked emotional moments or drama that seasons 2-4 had though. I saw the ending coming and find myself respecting it more than loving it.
Wbu?
Yeah i figured Uhtreds plan would make more sense in the final scenes
I do like how the basically brought all the surviving cast back to do one more small band mission. I could have just been a battle but the castle infiltration like that is more in spirit of Uhtred and his men
I think episode 4 hit me harder than any other episode. Her death was done really well tbh. Also this series has some of the best supporting characters like Ealhswith and Lord Aldhelm
A lot of the motivations made sense behind the characters actions. Which is rare i find with a lot of writing

See season one of this show
Have very mixed feelings about how they presented Aethelflaed throughout the show. She seems to get dumbed down a lot even though historically speaking to is probably the most successful ruler of her time. Especially relative to the poor hand she was dealt
But yes said to see her die in front of a sunset.
Agree on Lord Aldhelm
Pound for pound maybe given she was not expected to be in such a position
But Alfred, Edward and Aethelstan were all remarkably successful too
Those three generations stand out so much compared to what came after up until 1066
But then i guess conquering a kingdom is not the same as managing one
Edwards ruthless accession to Mercia was well done imo. It was as jarring as it reads in the history but wasnt randomly unbelievable based on his character in the show
Aethelstan wins points for being the first English king to walk into Scotland and smack the Scottish king with his d'ck

Insert Tom Hollands book on Aethelflaed here lol
I do agree it was a very successful period of revival - I just think she was slightly compromised
Alfred wins extra points for you know raising her and Edward to be who they were
Cant lie i see the admiration for Aethelflaed and how unusual she is in the time period
However i sympathise with the argument the fascination over her to Edwards detriment is why he is not ranked up with Alfred and Aethelstan
If i had to summarise my general view
Alfred is Philip of Macedon and Edward, Aethelflaed and Aethelstan are collectively Alexander
I dont compare Alfred to his children and grandchildren as his role was very different
I’ll leave you with this
I rewatched Dune the other day on my laptop
And I’ve downgraded my assessment of the film
Okaaay, lads. Just found this and had a run through it's intellectual flower beds.
They'll be needing some work.
Lol, I am a panellist at the Tory Party conference in September.
That Dune movie achieved something I never thought possible for a remake.
It was actually worse than the 1984 original. Ha!

Congratulations, Agent NPE. All this right wing rhetoric has fooled them. Destroy them from the inside out. Good man, comrade.
