Keep or sell Martial?

I think that there is still a way back for him, but it will come down to whether the new manager wants him. If he comes back with renewed confidence and him and the new manager get on then things can chance so quickly. The dream is that both he and VDB have excellent loan spells and return in the summer giving the new manager a headache.

I meant to add, that whoever does come in, needs to make sure that the wide forwards start working harder for the team. As they offer very little defensively at the moment.

If he comes back happy and motivated again I'd gladly keep him. We're likely to be very light up top at the end of this summer with potential outgoings + Greenwood likely gone.

If he wants to leave permanently though, let him. An unhappy Martial is a pretty useless player as we've seen for the past couple of seasons.

Have watched highlights out of curiosity of all his games at Sevilla. He seems to be super motivated and looks a completely different player.

At United he clearly wasnt giving it 100% in games and it was evident to see, which also goes for most our team, it’s clearly visible in matches the players who can’t be bothered and simply aren’t giving it their all.

Players like that and those who “down tools” should be gone from the team imo regardless of status or transfer fee, which is why there shouldn’t be a way back for Tony. A real shame for me as after the 19/20 season I really thought he’d kick on and become a top player for us.

Probably best for everyone if we move him on. I’d imagine he’s happy to be in a new environment and able to express himself once again with far less scrutiny.

If it’s working for him at Seville and they stump up decent cash we should leave him there the same as we should have done with Jesse at the Hammers.

Suddenly playing well after looking a sulky miserable tw@t with us, it’s a no from me.

If we’re getting a new manager, I don’t think we should be so quick to eject out of here.
It’s an option worth seriously considering, we may lose Cavani. We cannot rely on a 37, 38 yr old Ronnie.
We can’t trust Rashford. So unless we replace with like for like with Martial, let’s keep our option open.

Martial could fall under the multi-functional banner of RR's though so I wouldn't discard him completely.

Perhaps going to Sevilla will make him realise just what a massive club United is and he won't really go any higher. If, of course, he comes back and says he'd like to go and doesn't fancy fighting for his place then we should sell.

Not 100% sure about that Diafol.

He’s had one season in which he’s demonstrated that he can do a job through the middle, applying himself admirably to improve his hold-up play. Based on that we could argue that he can play well enough in two positions.

But I think RR would probably argue that the kind of winger one of these German CL-winning managers would want would also be able and willing to press (intelligently, in coordination with teammates), track and shadow out of position, and be careful and consistent in their passing and full of movement in possession. Maybe I’m being a little unfair, but I don’t think he’s really those things.

Through the middle, he’d also need to demonstrate that he could trigger and lead the press, would know when to drop in to link the wide men, would be tirelessly making runs across the line and in behind.

For me, he’s still a wonderful, wonderful wide player for a counterattacking side with a hardworking midfield and an outstanding defensive leftback.

Beyond that is he hardworking and dare I say it smart enough?

I think he could play wide, No9 and as a player behind the striker (more of a runner than passer though). I accept your points on his workrate though and you are right in questioning that. Perhaps I'm hoping a spell away will ignite something? Wishful thinking perhaps!

I'm not sure it's a case of not being bothered or not giving it their all, at least consciously.

Lack of form and confidence is a huge psychological issue at this elite level. Players get scared of making mistakes, scared of getting the ball, scared of being dropped. It all builds up to playing within themselves.

Or he could be a lazy

I like the player though, i think he could come back into the fold, with the right manager and get back on track.

I’d probably keep him if his heart is in it.

Cavani, Lingard, Mata are all off and Greenwood looks done as it’s stands. Ronaldo must go also imo unless he accepts a back up role which won’t happen.

That would leave us very light.

Sell, hopefully he does well so we can get a decent price for him but definitely sell.

He’s a bit like Berba for me in a way: a player that you just love to see on the team sheet because he’s great to watch on the ball, even though there’s a tiny voice in the back of your mind desperately trying to remind you that he’s a luxury player in an age in which luxury players are simply too much of a hindrance.

Sometimes players just need new team, a change of scenery. If we can get the 36 million outplay we spent on him i think we should take it.

On paper... With the expected to departure of Cavani and hoped for (by me) departure of Ronaldo we could do with more than one option at CF, and with the need to recruit in midfield, possibly right back, ideally goalkeeper, it's hard to see us buying two strikers. If we could have the Martial of the City game last season, he wouldn't be a bad second option.

In practice... hard to imagine Martial providing consistency and quality if he's not first choice. Probably better if we can make do with the new striker, possibly using Bruno as a false nine in Plan B, and who knows, maybe Ten Hag can utilise Rashford through the middle in his system (he has done wonders with players who aren't as good as Rashford at Ajax).

Ole was almost using Bruno as a false nine at times (albeit it with another striker), and it was one of his best roles for me.

In Rangnick’s 4-2-2-2, I’d pick Bruno in the front two every week.

Issue for us in the summer is that Greenwood is gone, ronaldo will leave as we won’t get top 4, cavani will be gone and who are we left with? Think we will be scavenging for players in the summer so martial may have to stay. We likely will lose champions league money also and will find it hard to attract talents because let’s be honest United is a sinking ship
----------------------------------------------------------------------
And we still won’t sign a midfielder we need and the roof will still leak
