It’s meant to be phenomenal according to AlLL the reviews I’ve read.
I'm fortunate that my Mrs has been roped in to work all weekend at the hospital too
As long as I do the minimum that needs doing, bit of food shopping, sort dinner out for when her shift ends or get a take away sorted I'm free to nerd up on it for the whole weekend

nice!
I did not realise it was out til yesterday and hastily ordered it, everything I’ve read on it points to it being absolutely top class, , well looking forward to it. Love dark souls and bloodborne
Yeah looking forward to it. Not going to have the spare hours though for a few weeks (after this weekend) to really go deep into it. Can sense a lot of frustration tomorrow when I get started as always. Recently got a new Oled TV too so been waiting for something worth playing on it
I raced through any outstandings at work, this morning; cancelled my afternoon meetings; and got it installed whilst finishing some bits.
Literally about to click new game! Buzzing

what excuse did you use for cancelling meeting?
It was just a catch-up with the big boss at work, and we’d caught up for an hour yesterday, after he got back from holiday.
So I worded it carefully: “appreciate we discussed the status of everything outstanding yesterday, so I’m happy to push this out to next week. Your call though” 😂
Make it seem like it’s his choice, and we all win!! 😂

Lol. It’s when you discover later that he agreed to bin the meeting because he’s playing it too!
Getting later today be good to hear your first impressions rooney & mike.
Oh mate, I wish! He’s an absolute jobsworth if ever I’ve met one.
The guy must be on an absolute wedge (as in, a few hundred grand a year) and yet, every single night at 10/11pm and every weekend / holiday day, you’re guaranteed to get emails from him.
I swear that some people just don’t like their lives / family 😂
Yeah I don’t get that mentality. Work to live not the other way around.
FFS Rooney!
I've got to wait until tomorrow to start it
Seeing as how you've had a light day work wise, I look forward to reading your extended initial review this evening after your first gaming session. Don't forget to show your workings.
😂
Can I tell you my first thoughts? And this probably reveals too much about my personality: you now have to press triangle to read messages, instead of X, and triangle again to exit them, instead of O.
Also, L3 is now crouch / stealth, as opposed to sprint, which returns to holding O, but to sprint & jump, you need to hold O and then press X.
Hours of Dark Souls and Bloodborne aren’t adapting well, in my first few minutes 😂 I don’t like change!
Ooooh didn't know that. Not sure why they'd change simple things like that unless their research has shown the new controls to be more user friendly to 'new' souls players?
You not going to change the controls in settings back to how you like them?
I went to do that, Mike, but I’m a big believer of experiencing things as their creators intended.
So, I’ve probably played an hour and a bit so far. I’ve gotta say, I’m a little ambivalent.
It isn’t a souls game, for sure, and I guess I kinda wanted a souls game.
Tell you this for free: the frame rate and draw distances (on performance mode!) absolutely suck. The graphics overall aren’t great - certainly worse than the Demon’s Souls remake - but, that being said, it feels huge already.
I can totally forgive graphics, frame rate issues, etc. if the gameplay and lore is awesome.
It’s gonna need a lot of time to make a proper determination. I can see already that you could sink hundreds of hours into it.
There also seems to be total freedom. You come out of the little tutorial area and bang - go wherever you want and do whatever you want.
What you playing it on rooney? Reports that the pc version isn’t optimized and isn’t working as well as the console versions.
PS5, Baz.
I think, at the moment, I’m just sceptical of the change and need time to familiarise myself with it.
Mounted combat, too!
Probably just being a little stuck in my ways and expecting a proper Souls game, which nobody ever said it was, in fairness.
I’m still running around naked and two-handing a halberd so I get that “skinny roll” action 😂
Will be ps 4 for me if it ever arrives, I reckon if the ps5 is struggling oa4 might be frustrating! We’ll see
They’ll be sorting the framerate with a patch i’m sure. I read the best way to get a solid consistent frame rate currently is to play the PS4 version on a PS5?
I’ve tried to be completely open minded and was not expecting another typical souls game. So hopefully won’t feel the same as you have so far. Although I agree I’m not fully arrsed about ‘graphics’ as such if the game is as good as they usually are.
I read that too, Mike, but I can’t anybody that has a PS5 buying the PS4 version for frame rate issues.
Ironically, the widespread consensus is that the PS5 is running much better than PC and Xbox, so I can’t imagine what those guys are experiencing; PC in particular.
Be interested to hear your thoughts, after you kill a few hours on it, today!
Baz, any luck with it arriving?
Not as yet hopefully today.
Which class did you start as? Was looking at samurai for the long bow. Used that a fair bit in dark souls to pick off some enemies before wading in. Confessor and vagabond look interesting too, tend to play more dex style, rather than strength or magic
It’s weird, I like mages more in literature and film - as in, if it were real life, I’d rather be able to do magic than be awesome with a sword - but I’ve always found it almost to be a cheat code, in games like this.
The first souls I played for DS1, and I was a pyromancer. There were definitely a couple of fights that I quasi-cheesed by spamming the fireball spell, and I just didn’t get the satisfaction of feeling of skill I got when I won fights by dodging and rolling. Since then, I try to do them all with a melee only approach.
Very long-winded way of saying I chose the warrior class!
Honestly, I think this game almost coerces you into using your magic / range and shield - none of which I usually do!!
Certainly some inertia on my side, however, I think it’s gonna be like my experience with DS2: I didn’t like it, then went away and read about it, came back and thought it was so much better.
Elden Ring is instantly better than DS2, but it’s a similar concept. I have to drop my stubbornness and accept I can’t go into the game being completely in the dark, and reading around it / watching a YouTube video or two about it isn’t the worst thing in the world.
After doing just that this morning, I’m already enjoying myself a lot more! Just a shame I’ve got to go into the real world for a footy match soon!!
From what I’ve read warrior seems a good choice. Normally in souls games heavy hitters are decent bets. I’ve played as a mage, it’s tough going til far on then it’s way mode, I spent ages doing what you did and leveling pyro to the max in ds1, which was a great investment.
Bit torn now. Guess the beauty is you can respec it if not working out! Got it now, just arrived a few mins ago but I’ve had a few beers, and I’m not sure it would mix well
Wonder how many controllers mike has smashed?
I think the reaction time would be non-existent, Baz 😂 maybe best for tomorrow.
There’s a decent fight on sky coming up next, if you’re into it? Perfect with a few beers

Happy Elden Ring day!
