I would argue that Lloris has improved with distribution....but only because he used to be sooooo poor. Now he just keeps it short whereas before he used to kick it to the opposition or out of play,
They were slow because Brighton did a number on us and there weren’t any options for the defence to pass to. Normally it would be shifted into midfield or out wide but those avenues were shut off, as was the more direct one to Kane. Brighton had a plan and executed it superbly. This is not on the defence. They were suffocated into playing that way.

interesting... I would argue that he has stayed the same, but because he only needs to do short passes (rather than sometimes the clipped diagnoals that Poch liked), it isnt under so much scrutiny. That said.. we have seen several instances this season alone where those short passes have still been misplaced, and on occasions led indirectly to goals (wolves home for example)
of course, this is only about his kicking, for most other areas, he is a top keeper.

this was obvious after 5 minutes, and the instruction should have been to use long diagnals to get out... we kept doing the same thing over and over there, and got nowhere, over and over.
Conte had a very poor day tactically, and the players lacked any kind of ability to think on their feet of how to resolve.

Not just his long balls but what does he offer?
All he does is boss Romero and Davies about. Pointing his hands trying to make himself look like he is a leader.
I've never been a fan of playing 3 CBs. All it does is leave us light in midfield or attack. If Brentford beat us and Conte keeps with his same formation without changing it, I wouldn't be bothered about finishing 4th, we can finish 6th for all I care and hope he leaves in the summer. Bring Poch and four at the back back. Or someone else.
Those clipped passes out to the left back, usually sailing over his head, used to really grip my shiiit.
So I guess i'm probably making the case that he has improved his decision making....his execution probably hasn't improved much at all.
What is this Sam Johnstone that we're linked to like? anyone know if he's a decent keeper, good with the ball at his feet, a possible future no.1 ?

I would say whilst he is capable if making top class saves but on the same hand he is capable of letting in a soft on which he has done too many times this season.
Next summer we should go big on a GK after his contract ends. I'm nervous about him being our no.1 for next season. He has never been regarded as a world class keeper. He was very lucky to captain France when they won the WC.

That's true and also on the rare occasions we got a ball through to a midfielder/attacker it bounced off them or they misplaced the pass.
It was a terrible performance from the whole team, Kanes display in particular was alarming. Unfortunately it was another match that played nicely into the hands of those who believe in the cliché that if Kane doesn't play well nor do Spurs.

Stole the below from some obscure website :
Sam Johnstone is a Goalkeeper who has appeared in 36 matches this season in Championship, playing a total of 3240 minutes. Sam Johnstone concedes an average of 0.86 goals for every 90 minutes that the player is on the pitch. Their Clean Sheets ratio is currently at 42%. That means Sam Johnstone has kept a Clean Sheet in 15 matches out of the 36 that the player has played in.
https://www.infogol.net/en/player/sam-johnstone/3621
56% passing completion rate is not great for a 29 year old.
I saw one game of WBA when Johnstone played. Can't remember the oppo, but he conceded two goals and both were soft and Lloris-esque. He got a hand to both goals, not at full stretch and they found their way in. Switched off after the second goal.
If we sign him he is just a tick box exercise imo. HG, Free, low wages and can be sold for a profit after a season or two.

Season ticket holder here as I live in the midlands. I can categorically state that Johnstone will never ever be good enough to be a top 6 number 1 in the Prem, he hasn't even been that good for Albion. This isn't to say he wouldn't be a good free signing as back up, English etc. His kicking ability is non existent, average shot stopper at best. No absolute redeeming qualities.

Yep everyone decided to have a bad game all in the same match ….I’m expecting a reaction
Eriksen and Toney will be dangerous though
Just read Skipp could be back tomorrow? Is this true? Does anyone have anymore concrete info ?
He was really coming on before his injury ….suprised me with some of his technical abilities (he certainly gets about the pitch and wins tackles which we need)
I’d rather skipp than PEH that’s for sure

If we want to mount a serious challenge for the Prem, which is what Conte would ideally like to do, we should be in the market for a top class keeper. Two top CB's to partner Romero if Conte insists on 5 at the back.
A replacement for Royal and one of Reg or Sess sold and upgraded. And thats just in defense! Obviously never going to happen so we will be short for next season but hopefully will have a better starting team that this seasons.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
5 out of the back 6 replaced Dream on man!
I think it proved the frailties of playing five at the back. If we had an extra body in midfield, there would have been more to pick out. Because they had the extra man, Bissouma was free to man mark Kane out of the game. We had a surplus of defenders just knocking the ball to each other with no options on. Such a waste of time.
When you look at the fact that Arteta normally starts with a back four but decided to go three (5) against Chelsea, it proves that flexibility could be the difference in the run in. Conte's tactics could completely undo us. Brighton have provided the blueprint. We have no individual craft so if we're found out tactically, there's no tricky player that can break the lines and move the opposition about. Under Conte, Chelsea had Hazard to get them out of similar holes and eventually the system got found out. We'll see I guess but I'll be surprised if Brentford don't study that Brighton game and follow suit.
I really get worried when start to mess about with the ball at the back ......none of the bar Romero looks comforatable on the ball

Even if we make 6 signings this summer it will only keep us around 4rd at best and 7th in the league next year.

What is this Sam Johnstone that we're linked to like? anyone know if he's a decent keeper, good with the ball at his feet, a possible future no.1 ?

lloris is a problem for progressive football from the back.
in the modern game, ability with the feet is one of the most important attributes for most passing sides, and his shortfall in this area alone is the reason why he isnt a modern day world class keeper (maybe he was when the sweeper keeper was more in fashion).
I find it astounding that for someone who has been at the club 10 years, in those world class training facilities, has been unable to show any kind of improvement whatsoever in his footwork.
what it means is that when we pass it around at the back, the quality of the ball from keeper to centre backs is slightly off, slowing it down, alowing us to be pressed....
it is why we see keeper -> cb -> cb -> keeper -> hoof out of play, so often.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I would argue that Lloris has improved with distribution....but only because he used to be sooooo poor. Now he just keeps it short whereas before he used to kick it to the opposition or out of play,
----------------------------------------------------------------------
interesting...
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I would say whilst he is capable if making top class saves but on the same hand he is capable of letting in a soft on which he has done too many times this season.
Next summer we should go big on a GK after his contract ends. I'm nervous about him being our no.1 for next season. He has never been regarded as a world class keeper. He was very lucky to captain France when they won the WC.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
That's true and also on the rare occasions we got a ball through to a midfielder/attacker it bounced off them or they misplaced the pass.

Back 4? Since when? We play 5 at the back.
If Eric Dier is still in the starting eleven next season Paratici has failed. His long balls lately have been ineffective.
I said this on another thread. The whole team is built around Dier. On a chess board he would be the King and Romero would be the Queen who can move freely and be proactive. All he does is stand there.
I feel for Joe Rodon and hope he is given a chance one day. I would sell Dier this summer and keep Joe around. No problem.
The other day Doherty and Davies gave an interview and were asked who is the teacher's pet? Guess who they said without hesitation - Dier.
This is a massive red flag. He has duped Jose, Nuno and now Conte. I would hope Conte would be ruthless enough to drop Dier but he cannot see he is a terrible player and only plays because he is a sweet talker. Amazing really. Conte needs to wake up.
Rewatch the Brighton goal. Surprise surprise Dier sticks his hands up asking for offside lol, then when Trossard drops his shoulder, Dier literally shats himself and moves away. He is so so poor it's unreal.
"But he has played well this season" Frauded.

Hence why I said never going to happen 🤡. We are miles behind City, Liverpool and Chelsea for that matter.
Even if we make 6 signings this summer it will only keep us around 4rd at best and 7th in the league next year.

I said the same thing after the Brighton game about Brentford. If they copy Brighton they will have half a chance because it is not that hard to replicate.
