Barca being foolish enough to break the bank for Coutinho also played a role in Klopp’s success imo but fair play for spending that money so well.

In hindsight yeah but at the time was it foolish? Cout was our best player and in top form, they already paid 130m for dembele so was expected it'd cost a lot for someone like Cout?

Liverpool as a club has first-rate scouting and data operations, which have delivered outstanding ROI on player acquisitions

Our player recruitment before Klopp was a lot more hit and miss...

Maybe, but it seemed to be doing pretty well overall in the moneyball stakes, with the likes of Suarez and Coutinho being hugely successful investments that generated massive profits. But aside from that, it would be interesting to hear any details that suggest Klopp himself had a decisive role in improving recruitment, rather than the club as a whole getting better at it around the time he arrived. E.g. didn't Michael Edwards land the sporting director job at a similar time to Klopp's arrival?

I emphasise again that I'm not trying to play down Klopp's genius as a coach. Just we often overlook the role that an elite sporting operation plays in success. That's probably why, for instance, Klopp was smart enough to turn down United (where he'd presumably earn higher wages and have more money to spend on players). Actually, that's another quality we could identify in an outstanding manager: the ability to spot the opportunities to make the biggest impact. That's something we should strongly credit Klopp for: with his cachet at the time, and looking at Liverpool's perceived place in the hierarchy at the time of Rodgers' sacking, on a superficial level there might have been a perception that Klopp could have gone to a bigger club. But he saw the potential at Liverpool, and probably saw that on a calculating level that went beyond the romantic sense of the club's history and culture.

Horses for courses, Klopp suits Liverpool, a club with traditions, fans who buy into the novel and charismatic requests for support, a smaller budget and the underdog mentality.

Pep likes to join sides with quality squads, money to spend, too facilities etc etc. he requires those conditions to be successful.

So as a Utd fan, now, I would choose Klopp. If I were a fan of Real Madrid, PSG, Bayern (hopefully Utd in 3 years) I’d pick Pep.

Both incredible.

Personally I’d prefer klopp, just like him and his football more obviously.

But you can’t ignore peps achievements. He’ll finish his career as the most successful manager of all time.

If you were Pep would you take a smaller team/smaller budget team and build them to prove to yourself and other that you could do it or not risk failing and exposing yourself? If it was me, I’d just love to try and do it without the money - even take a lower division club and see what I could really do.

Ps - shut up Sandy, it’s boring now!
