The biggest clubs spend the most money because they have the most money to spend.
====
Not necessarily true tbf. Some clubs spend the most because they have rich owners.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

I see your point, and (ironically) raise it.

Clubs like Chelsea and City - who are not bigger than Liverpool, United, Madrid, Barcelona, for example, spent more to try and usurp them. But when it comes comes to any list in regards to spending, the biggest clubs will still feature.

So my point remains. The biggest clubs overall spend the most money. “Biggest” doesn’t just relate to one or two. It is all relative in that regard.

Why look at the decade though? Why not look at the past 100 years. Liverpool and united have been big spenders for decades. City not until 10 years ago or whenever the sheik took over.

yep Liverpool bought the title in 87.8 when they signed Barnes Beardsley Aldridge in one year.

That would be 400m spend today

Would love to see what this looks like over 2 decades - I’m pretty sure Chelsea will be looking much worse. That’s the thing, Chelsea have been financially doped for so long that they can spend less these days as they are starting from a higher base.

United are insane, Everton even more so. Villa needed to spend big when they came back up, I think they were right to do so.

The one I laugh at the most is Newcastle - kept bleating in about how Ashley had bled the club dry and wouldn’t buy them players - they’ve spent more than Spurs!!!! that’s insane

Worse supported club of the big six, Chelsea.

Where their attendances have slipped to a little over 30,000. Ouch.

There's way, way, WAY worse owners floating around football than Mike Ashley. No-one would actively choose him to be their clubs owner, but the degree to which Newcastle fans went on about him was PL, entitled spoilt brat stuff.

I've had an affinity with Charlton all my life, Ashley was 10x better than the last three owners they've had (particularly that Roland mug) to give just one example of a club that's had it far worse.

posted on 10/5/22

Charlton aren’t a premier league club, though. Newcastle are one of the biggest clubs in England and were relegated twice. Ashley was a terrible owner, there’s nothing entitled about their fans pointing that out.

How funny that we keep being told the Arsenal are a "young" and "developing" team, yet there they are up there in 5th on net 583m.

Really clever what people can 'spin' these days.

As a famous quote goes ....."you can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all of the time, but you cannot fool all of the people all of the time"

Actually, thinking about it, that also applies to the chances of City not breaking FFP rules.

---------------------------------------------------------
There was an entitlement about their fans thinking it couldn't be worse, cos it absolutely could've been. Ashley at least looked out for his own interests competently, too many clubs that alone would make him an attractive proposition.

It's more a damning reflection of some of the clueless vultures that circle football these days & someone can always claim to have it worse. I bring up Charlton as an example, but none of theirs wanted to rename the club or change the colour of the kits, so by comparison they've not even had it that bad

----------------------------------------------------------
OK lets go by clubs who have roughly the same standing within English football - Leeds had it worse for around the same amount of time. Bates is an idiot, and the Italian guy after him was insane & stupid.

Newcastle were relegated twice, but the 1st time they kept the majority of the squad when Ashley could've overthought & dismantled it on the cheap if he wanted. The 2nd time they did make a few more changes, but he brought in Benitez as the manager who you'd trust at that level. There's plenty of owners who would've seen them fade away into oblivion after one relegation let alone two (their own next door neighbours can attest to that), he didn't.

Stand by what I said, Ashley might not even be in the worse 50% of owners who've been in English football the last 15-20 years. The bar's low, but it is what it is. They weren't as hard done by as they could've been, not even close.
