In the last European Cup 32 teams entered at the first round. There’s 55 member states in UEFA now. It’s daft thinking they’d be comparable.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Anything's got to be better than the borefest we're saddled with now. The group stages are like watching coastal erosion.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It is more the knock out stages that is like watching coastal erosion like the video below of City's collapse against Real Madrid.

The only way a straight knock out would have enough interest is if you do it the way the FA Cup is - so a lot of qualifiers for the likes of San Marino, Armenia, Luxembourg teams through to Swedish, Norwegian, Czech etc teams.
Then add in 48 from the second tier leagues like France, Netherlands, Portugal, Austria, Russia in round 1.
Then 44 teams from England, Italy, Spain and Germany get added in from the third round.

The problem with the new set up - 10 game, 30 odd team group is that come rounds 6/7 you are going to start having a load of dead rubbers?

Add in that not every one plays everyone in the group and it could be farcical. You could have Real playing their 5 away games against Olympiacos, PSV, Nicosia, CSKA Sofia and Partizan Belgrade, whilst Man City’s away games could be - PSG, Bayern, Juve, Barcelona and Atletico. It’s nuts and open to even more abuse and unevenness - so of course UEFA bl00dy love it

The problem is that you have to stare the cliff with nothing much happening for the other 89 minutes

Yeah but there was that intitial slight collapse in the video to make it 2-1, but I didn't expect that huge collapse to follow a few seconds later to make it 2-2 then 3-2. Sensational coastal erosion and why the white cliffs of dover are the best cliffs in the world.

All I was doing when reading this was scratching my head as to why West Ham were mentioned ?

Apart from anything else, do they actually have a 5 year European coefficient that can be counted ?

That is the whole point, you don't need one. You just have to finish 5th when your nation is top 2 performing in club competitions.

Well it wouldn't have happened unless there had been some erosion in the group stages. What do you suggest, just skip the initial erosion and put some explosives in the cliffs to make it exciting without any of the build up of erosion? Seems unfair and people would know it's not natural. Just start the competition in the semis??

I think you'd lose a lot with no second legs as that's often where so much of the excitement in the CL comes from.

Just over the last few years you'd have none of the comebacks of Barca v PSG, Liverpool v Barca, Spurs v Ajax, City v Madrid and so on.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

It evens out though because atm the 1st legs feel a bit redundant. A one-and-done format like the World Cup/NFL playoffs brings its own inherent drama.

This all feels like desperation from UEFA tbh to save a failing product, by making small but inconsequential changes.

The CL will be defunct within 10 years. It’s a commercial failure.

Since when has there been 10 group matches in the CL?

Really wish they'd separate European Cup wins from CL wins instead of adding them together.

Completely different competitions.
