Aguero was very highly rated but again wasnt even close to the numbers Haaland produces

Haaland :
2019–2020 Red Bull Salzburg 16 (17)
2020–2022 Borussia Dortmund 67 (62)

Aguero:
2003–2006 Independiente 54 (23)
2006–2011 Atlético Madrid 175 (74)

numbers are close ... also add in the fact that Haaland is also a good bit younger than Kun when he joined city
----------------------------------------------------------------------

He was a year younger, so not that much really, and Agüero's credentials were definitely not to be sniffed at.

The biggest difference is the hype. Bear in mind that Agüero wasn't even Atlético's main striker, but still scored a hundred goals for them, accompanied by a shedload of assists, and supported Forlán well enough for the latter to win the European Golden Boot.

In doing that, he helped drag a dysfunctional Atleti side that went through two or three managers every other year, back from more than a decade out in the wilderness. With him they won their first silverware since 1997 and put them back in the Champions League for the first time since '98, as well as being chosen Liga player of the year at age 19.

Haaland's played for a side that mullers the Austrian League every season and a Dortmund side that hasn't issed out on the CL in over a decade.

I wouldnt entirely agree with all that.

first of all No one is sniffing or discrediting what Aguero did, we was an amazing striker. Haaland is just a level above IMO and the stats show it.

firstly Aguero was 2 years older when he joined City.

Aguero wasnt second fiddle to forlan, he was secnd fiddle to torres. he replaced torres one season later when he left for Liverpool. Forlan played in the 10 playing off either torres or aguero.

He joined a resurgent Atleti, who had torres, had signed maniche, costinha, forlan, aguero, luis garcia.

saying there is a massive difference in the 3/4th team in spain and the 2nd/3rd best team in germany isnt correct IMO.

but you can also look at national team, i dont think its outlandish to say that Ageuro has played in a far better national team than Haaland has.

Ageuro scored 44 times in 101 games for Argentina
Haaland scored 20 in 21 games for Norway

Champions league: Haaland 27 goals in 26 games (including 4 goals in 5 games for Molde)
Aguero 65games - 39 goals

stat wise Haaland beats him quite comfortably

No skin in this argument as you know dunnit but you have to be careful with the comparison. UEFA and CONMEBOL are vastly different organisations. The latter with only 10 good to outstanding teams battling it out between each other all the time - a bit boring TBH! Point is there are no whipping boys like UEFA has in its 55 teams.

13/55 UEFA teams qualify for the WC.
4/10 CONMEBOL teams qualify - could have been 5 if Peru had won the pens against Oz.

An indicator of the better quality teams.

Nxt look at Haalands goals.
https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/erling-haaland/nationalmannschaft/spieler/418560

One against Netherlands. The rest are against average to dross teams relative to his own.

Aguero aint a whole lot better https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/sergio-aguero/nationalmannschaft/spieler/26399 and I agree the overall ratio is poor but he has the advantage of having been there and done it at club level.

Haalands CL stats are beyond challenge.

All in all a tough comparison. Both excellent.

I just hope he stays fit. Feels to me that he may never fulfil his potential at it may be a shortish career judging by how many times he has missed games.

The only argument of merit there is Haaland's international goals. Then again, you say it's not all about numbers, but numbers are the only argument you've made.

For the rest, your reply contains a considerable number of inaccuracies:

1. Age difference
Haaland turns 22 in July. Agüero turned 23 in June 2011. That's a 13-month gap, a year if you don't wish to split hair, which I very much doubt is what you had in mind in your original claim.

2. Atleti, the 3rd/4th club in Spain
On silverware and current financial muscle, Atlético are Spain's 3rd club. But the 10 years prior to Agüero's arrival they were mired in a financial and sporting crisis. In that time, they had several bottom half finishes, spent two years in the and never finished higher than 7th, and hadn't qualified for Europe since the turn of the century.

So no, there is absolutely no comparison to the BvB side that Haaland's played in.

The resurgency you speak of happened as of Agüero's arrival, not before. Atlético have always had recognisable names in their squads but back in those times most of them were either washed up or had lost their way and often joined Atlético as a kind of last chance saloon. Maniche was a fat fack, a good 10-15 lbs overweight; he never pulled up any trees in Spain and got sent out on loan in his second season. Costinha was into his 30s and never even a starter. Liverpool reject Luis García arrived in 07-08, when Agüero was already there, and was another flop who made 12 and 5 league starts respectively in his two seasons with them.

Torres, their only actual star, was an academy lad who'd been around since their Second Division days. As soon as Atleti saw the gem they'd found in Agüero, they flogged Torres to Liverpool for a record fee and brought in Forlán to provide the goals.

So, as stated, Forlán wouldn't arrive until the following season either. Your comment is contradictory in that regard, because you state both that he arrived after Agüero, but also that he was already there playing off Torres.

To be clear, Agüero played a single season, as an 18-year-old, alongside Torres. Forlán was his strike partner the rest of his time there, which brings me to the next point.

As established, your assertion that Forlán played both off Torres and Agüero is wrong, not only because the former were never together at the club, but also because it was Torres and Forlán who played the main striker role at Atleti. Agüero played the support striker role to both, just as Diego Costa did for Falcao until the latter moved on and he slotted into the 9 position.

Back to Haaland - yes, his goalscoring record is indeed impressive. Goal-a-game strikers are extremely rare, more so at his age - but I also think it's pretty unarguable that the sides he's played for so far have pretty much played for him and to his strengths, while Agüero at his same age was carrying a much greater creative burden and devoting much of his time looking to create chances for another striker.

I'm not saying that Agüero's signing created more expectation, but what I do think is that at the time he was a much more rounded footballer.

His accomplishments up to that point were much more than the number of goals he'd scored, which is why Atlético pretty much threatened to battle Real Madrid in the Spanish courts and drag it out as many years as possible just to prevent them from signing him.
