I'm getting back into England again. It's good to see young players come through who despite all the media's negativity are actually quite talented. It think the future is bright
I find i'm far more wound up watching Spurs than England and thats been the case for a long time. Maybe its an age thing and call me cynical but international football seems so ridiculous and the media circus surrounding it is infantile added to that its weird when non-football fans jump on the bandwagon every other summer and the nation goes mental for two weeks... At its best it is unifying for the country (Italia 90, Euro 96) but increasingly it seems irrelevant.
Good point above RE the Rugby WC but then we (England) don't have 18 months of qualifying to go thru - just cuts straight to the action.
The trend is grim:
wc2010 - rubbish
euro2008 - rubbish
germany 06 - good
euro2004 - great
wc2002 - great
As ever more money/global fans flow into club football, it's bound to be the case that international football falls further and further down the pecking order. There's one pie, and the larger club football becomes the smaller slice left for the international game.
From EURO 2016 the number of teams in the finals will expand to to 24, there are only 53 teams in UEFA so with that in mind whats the point in going through the hassle of having teams like Spain/France/Germany/Italy/Holland and yes (whisper it) England go through 15 odd months of qualifying - just cut to the chase, have a proper ranking system the top teams of which go through automatically to the finals.... As for friendlies take them around the country and keep the WC qualifiers at Wembley - with the WC qualifying groups have more group of death scenarios and less seeding - in 94 we had Holland which kept it exciting...
