Conte being properly brutal with them.

Gil, Matar Sarr and Parrot seemed to come out of it the best which was good to see, maybe they will find a way into the manager's plans this year.

Deki missed out on training today with a calf strain which apparently isn't all that major, but seeing him on the sidelines does reinforce my belief that alongside Richarlison we do need another attacking signing to give us that bit more depth, especially as I don't think Lucas is quite at the level anymore.

Now we know why Kane does'nt score in August

Meh. From what I understand he’s pretty much the model professional. Likely just one of those days in the heat. No issues for me that he’ll be ready.

Good point,...still lugging around his holiday weight and 0.5 secs off the pace.

Tell you what, he wont like it. Its still early but he will not enjoy the shame of jogging in well last and throwing up

What Conte is doing isnt just fitness work (of course thats one of the main points of pre season. But he will be character testing, he wont really be taking the results and saying the best performers in pre season get ahead. He will be looking for those that push them to the limits and spue their ringer. One that are gonna goo beyond. Thats what he will have his eye on. the guys pushing the heart monitors higher, they are the guys you rely on throughout a season

---------

I have been surprised that people seem to be happy with our forward options. we have stevie B out and Richarlison in.... added no depth whatsoever, apart from arguably richarlison's versalitity. unless perisic is going to be a front 3 option then we are still a man light there. cannot rely on Lucas for any extended period of time.

Perhaps Gil will be staying.

For six positions we'd have Kane, Son, Kulusevski, Lucas, Richarlison & Gil. Which is absolutely fine.

I think we are well covered in the attacking areas.

Current options include, Kane Son Deki, Richarlison, Perisic Moura and Gil.

Not sure too many teams will have more options than that and no one has 5 top class attackers, we have 4 top quality + Moura + 2 others

I think what that represents is pretty routine pre-season stuff where everyone has a base level of fitness. Kane I think is just one of those guys, a bit like Rooney, who's base level isn't up there with the others. That's why he works so hard.

I do think though that Conte's training methods are a bit of a window into why he's rarely at clubs long term. If you run players into the ground as much as he does, there's only so long players will go with him on that journey. He's brutal to work for by all accounts so the romance can only last so long before it becomes suffocating. The players will down tools after 2-3 seasons.

That's the magic of Klopp and Pep. They seem to make it fun, not authoritative, particularly Klopp. He won't stand for people being off the pace in training but he'll make it fun too. That's why he lasts as long as he does.

100% don not agree with this.

If you think Klopp and Pep are having a pre season giggle with their squads you are on another planet. There's one to get fit and that's to cover distance. Sprints, high intensity, endurance, there is no substitute for it.

Kane returned to training like a week later than everyone else, it’s understandable that he’d be the least fit. Apparently Son was equally off the pace.

When I say fun, I'm not talking about getting the party poppers out. I'm saying there will be ways to get the players fit with ball work rather than monotonous running.

I already made the point that Klopp won't accept anyone being off the pace but the age of constant drill runs is over. Players want to be fit, yes, but they also need to engage.

We can't judge this completely as it's pre-season and obviously runs like this will be necessary to shake off the holiday boozing. It becomes more of an issue if they're doing it for weeks and weeks without much in the way of ball work.

Ask a player to do a 100 laps of a pitch, he'll have a whinge. Ask a player to dribble the same distance with a ball, he'll do it willingly. That's what separates good coaches from great ones.

Authority only works for a short time. Respect lasts longer.

two ways to look at it ... you cannot work on your fitness as well with the ball at your feet you cant .

there are so many factors and its nowhere near as simplistic as you make out.

First of all what you seen was a glimpse of pre season just a single session. Do not assume this is the norm.

The will break down what is most effective for whatever parts of pre season they are in.

Is it even really more effective training with a ball anyway? I suspect that if you break down the stats players spend a very low percentage of the game running with the ball at their feet.

That was just one session I would assume they will do another session that day.

While what fridge says is painfully simplistic (as per his character).

It is reported that Conte’s training/dietary requirements are even stricter than other coaches - hence why there can be a burnout. He obviously does most his training with the ball though.

I would be massively surprised if Conte is the one drawing up the "fitness" parts of training.

I would think he sits down with this conditioning coaches and explains how he wants the team to play. They will then analyse it and determine the key areas needed to focus on in order to be as effective as possible in the way he plays. They will then draw up and run the training sessions for the fitness side of things.

The days of the head coach of manager deciding all this are for the most part at this level gone.
