I may get criticised for this but I'd rather Maguire than Varane in the team.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

If both were fit and EtH's plan is for it to be one of them + Martinez, what is your reasoning for going for Maguire?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
My reasoning is that if Martinez is going to be one of thr CBs then I want him to settle in quickly and get a partnership going. IMO that's much more likely to come with Maguire who at least has durability as a quality. If Varane could be depended upon to start the majority of matches then I would reconsider. I do think Maguire may do well under Ten Hag though as he does like to carry the ball forward and is decent at it. Better than Varane I'd say from the evidence in a United shirt.

We may well see Martinez in DM though and him dropping back when the CB comes into midfield to create an overload or something.

He’s probably trying all our options at RCB to see who would best partner Martinez. Bailly has been there, Lindelof too. It was Maguires first appearance today.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

That's certainly possible.

On a side note, I think AWB's game-time under EtH is going to be very limited. Looking at what our FB's are doing in the games so far, we're seeing them tuck in sometimes into an inside position, sort of like an auxiliary midfielder. There's just no way AWB has the tight technical attributes to be able to play effectively in those areas of the pitch.

Ten hag backing maguire will cost him his job. He's the worst CB in the league
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Ridiculous comment given he's literally England's first choice CB.

Maguire had a terrible season the one just gone but the year before he was decent for us.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That says more about Southgate than it does about maguire
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Well given there must be more than 30 CB's in the PL that qualify for England......I'd say your comment was absolute nonsense then.

Maguire is nowhere near the worst CB in the league. He didn't go for £80m because he was rubbish did he?

I don't think any of our players form from last season means anything really. There were clearly issues going on that go beyond form.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Genuine question. Do you think he is a better defender than Craig Dawson?

If everyone is fit it’s obviously varane and Martinez. Maguire is a serial loser and terrible player and too slow . He’s a hazard
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Hes your captain. Incredible decision from tenbob hag

For the record I don't really care who plays CB. It can be Lindelof and Jones as far as I'm concerned if it's the best option!

We must surely be looking to sell a defender or two now though you'd think. We have Varane, Maguire, Lindelof, Martinez, Bailly, Jones and Tuanzebe! Perhaps ETH considers the last three as one player though considering their place in the pecking order and injury records!

Diafol - we will not see Martinez as a DM because he is not one. Has Ten Hag said this or something? It’s we known ten hag likes a left footer as a left sided centre back like van gaal. That’s why he’s coming in.

Varane or Bailey ahead of Maguire who is too slow and too poor. He will be destroyed in a high line
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Perhaps not but I wouldn't completely rule it out either.

Martinez is not gonna play as a midfielder 🤣 what is the obsession on here with putting square pegs in round holes? He’s definitely coming in as a centre back and the manager is prepping to see who plays right side. He needs a defender who’s quality on the ball to play CB for his style to work. So martienz starts as his left sided CB. That’s 100 percent.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Ajax players are schooled to be multi-functional. From Ajax's defence alone, Blind, Timber and Martinez all play CB, FB and in midfield. It's a staple of Dutch football in general.

Literally no one has said that we're signing Martinez to be a CM for us. No one. Instead, people are simply acknowledging his versatility and skillset and how that might, on occasion at least, be deployed into an area of the pitch where we lack some of the qualities he brings.

This the entire foundation of this article is about *who partners Martinez at CB*.

TL;DR? Stop facking whinging all the time.

Berba king - still makes no sense when the defence we have is not good enough playing out from the back. Someone like Martinez is needed to help start attacks and accurate build up. It’s why he’s needed in defence
----------------------------------------------------------------------

That's not the whole story though. Part of the reason our build up is often laboured isn't because of the defence per se (Lindelof is a good passer, and Maguire & Shaw are decent enough, too), but also the lack of a midfielder who really excels and is comfortable coming and taking the ball from the defence to start moves. We don't yet have a specialist in this respect, and it's clearly a key reason that FDJ is our primary target. Eriksen can also help in this regard and, I imagine, Martinez could do this role as well, when needed.

Managers deploy players in secondary roles quite frequently, and EtH is known for it. Martinez will almost certainly play other positions sometimes, just as we'll see Eriksen play different roles for us and so on.

De jong is going with Barca for their tour so make not happening now
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Is he? They claimed they were counting on him for the tour, which is exactly what they would say before spinning the story that he didn't want to go. Not saying he's not going but just haven't seen any confirmation he's on the plane

To be fair, Wan Bissaka has zero attributes to play effectively anywhere on a football pitch.

I don't think De Jong going on tour means much. He's still under contract to Barca so he can't refuse as they could use that against him.

It depends on who plays along side him. If it is someone quick then Maguire will be fine.

Ten Hag has spoken in the past about Martinez lacking the necessary stamina to play in midfield so I'd be surprised if he ended up playing there even as a back up.

It'll be better for us having a naturally left-footed player at LCB who can pass the ball with real quality.

He could just be a club captain who sits on the bench.

After all, he has just signed a player who plays in his exact position.

posted on 15/7/22

The thing with Maguire is he's good in the air (in his own box at least), but terrible one-on-one. So it's difficult to see him doing well in an attacking system.
