Do you honestly believe that at around 4:30pm on Sunday, we just pulled the names Arnautović and Rabiot out of a hat and made bids on them?
Btw - aren't they, by definition, alternatives?

Not sure that including them as preferred alternative targets reflects any better on the club or ETH actually
It's shiiite business either way

I thought most of us were just getting behind ETH and his decisions?
I don't get how two low cost players can be deemed shiiite signings 1) Before they've even signed and 2) Before they've kicked a ball for us.
It's not the big signings any of us wanted... But it seems a bit daft to write them off imho, especially Rabiot.

Plan A straight to Plan Z transfers policy
utd are not in a position to be tunnel vision about the transfers. If there are obstacles to a transfer, we need to move on and not hope those obstacles magically disappear.
The idea that there aren't alternatives is a reflection of how bad our scouts/recruitment team is .
It is not like we are pursuing the creme de la creme of players
Who's looking forward to seeing the might McFrediot?

Surely its more worrying if that isnt the case? If the board and the manager feel the actual back ups are those two then sorry but that is shocking beyond words!
I would rather those were panic buys that board and manager actually thinking these are valid alternatives.
With them it’s about filling in gaps in the squad I suspect. Regarding alternatives to De Jong, no player really exist given his unique skillset, so we’ll have to shuffle things around to try and fix issues within the parameters of the budget we have.
A real big problem we are having is getting rid of players. We need to sell players to bring more funds and to get them out the club, but we are paying for years of bad management that has left us with many highly paid unwanted players.
It’s a cumulative issue that is going to take years to fix, if we even are capable of it.
I'd imagine a player like Rabiot has been offered around to clubs all summer by his Mum/Agent and no ones been that interested but we obviously kept an eye on it. We're now a little desperate and lokked back at who's available.
I read earlier that Juve at one point were even considering terminating his contract this summer just to get rid.

IF both signings are actually true, I'll just have to hope ETH has a plan in mind.
We don't know anything about his thinking on these signings (obviously)... If plan A of De Jong is off, and his is thinking about Rabiot and a squad player while they pinpoint the perfect #6 over the next year, I'm ok with that... ETH has repeated several times that he wants the right players, which I assume to mean the big money, first XI signings.
Arnautović, who knows where he is in the pecking order.. If Ronaldo stays, he's likely 3rd/4th place striker... I don't really care that much who is our 3rd/4th placed striker... I'd love to be back in the late 90s, with four amazing ones... but those days are over.
I saw some Athletic article that tried to find which player is most like FdJ in terms of stats and the conclusion was overwhelmingly Ibrahim Sangare at PSV. I've seen the total sum of 0 minutes of this guy play so have absolutely no idea but I'd imagine EtH would be fully aware of him seeing as he plays in Holland.

it is not the fact that they are low cost that people have a problem with
but that both players are mediocre at best
yes, miracles can happen and ETH might turn mediocre players into top players . But we already have a squad full of mediocre players
No one seemed too bother when the rumours of Sesko were circulating... The guy had scored a grand total of 6 goals!
Anyway, i'll see if either of these rumours actually happen before worrying too much.

I did because I’d heard he plays similar to Lukaku.
TBF I think plenty brought up Sesko's goal tally and the fact he seems to not have a very good first touch.
He's a very different transfer though isn't he in that he's still a teenager and someone who can hopefully develop under someone like EtH. He was also wanted by other clubs and looks like going to Leipzig.
I think a key issue with both Rabiot and Arnautovic is that irrelevant of their ability they both seem like idiots who could cause unrest at a club that are already crumbling mentally.
Maybe it's dawned on ETH that Fdj and a forward won't be enough with our budget, so maybe we'll be targeting cheaper players to fill the number of problem areas.
I’d rather have the Austrian Zlatan than the Slovenian Lukaku.
What about the Austrian Peter Crouch?
I see most people making the manager blameless on this. Say what you want about the scouts and upper management but if a Klopp was in change, no such sh1tshow would ever happen. ETH has a big say on who is coming and he totally messed it up and his lack of experience at a high level really shows.

Look at Klopp's first signing here. Hardly stellar!

If you want a model of how to sort it out, Arteta at Arsenal is a fair example. Initially prepared to work with the players he had, he has created an identity, and gradually improved the squad. Taken a while tho.
I’m not sure the second worst run club in England should be taking tips from the third worst club in England on how to fix their problems.
