Not listened to the podcasts but what feeling did you get from it in terms of how genuine the above claims are? Were they planning for these players a while or has this just been fed to the journalists as a bit of a PR exercise.
The only reason I ask is because Rabiot and Arnautovic weren't mentioned by anyone this Summer. If the interest from them is genuinely long term then I suppose it shows journos don't know everything and we shouldn't take their word as gospel.
Laurie Whitwell and Andy Mitten get some of it straight from the horse’s mouth.
They were talking about how difficult it is not to mention stuff they’re told not to report, but Whitwell (I think) said people at the club were talking about Arnautovic weeks back.
Obviously there are stories about enquiries and transfers that are going to be leaked at times considered beneficial to the club (like after a home defeat against Brighton ), but these can be about processes that have been going for weeks or months already.

I get a feeling management tries to finish one transaction after another because as soon as they show interest the club and players involved just sell it to media to help them boost the value. Why not get rabiot in early if the interest was this solid?

As for your other post it just goes to show that when it comes to transfers we don't really know exactly what's going on unless the interested parties want us to know.
At least a partial answer to the repeatedly-asked question ‘What does the United scouting team actually do?’ seems to be identify and recommend players which the transfer team chooses not to chase.
———
This has been the case for a while. There was a coach that mentioned that they’d recommended De Jong and De Ligt years ago but were ignored.

Yeah, but when you consider our hit to miss ratio over the last 8 years it becomes pretty farcical.
I suppose there's every chance though that none of those would be the players they are today if they'd joined us. Similarly, I do sometimes wonder how the careers of the likes of Martial, Pogba and Mata would've gone if they hadn't spent so much time in a complete clown show.

Depends on the play I would say, Pogba and Martial have struggled with injuries and at times questionable effort and attitude. I doubt they would of been much different at other clubs. Mata is a strange one started well at United didn't he? Can't really explain that one or Rashford for that matter, Rashford was looking like a potential world class player.
I actually found it quite upsetting we pulled out of the Arnautovic deal not because I wanted him or any stop gaps like this but if the manager has made decision to go for a player and the club has backed him, they should not be changing their minds because of some perceived backlash from the fans or a bunch of talking heads on TV looking for the slightest chance to get at United. It shows weak leadership IMO.
Chris Sutton in particular is just walking clickbait these days. Regularly gives the BBC a sensationalist quote they can use to try to grab Daily Mail readers' attention
Why would we have monitored Rabiot for a long time and only acted now? When his currently club have banished him to the u23s and have wanted to get rid all summer. It literally makes no sense.
If all this is true about of scouts (I thought we were currently overhauling it) then surely it shows that’s DoF would really be beneficial.
