Doherty was in fine form before his injury, creating chances and scoring. Hopefully he will get back in a recapture that form.

I’ve been saying this all summer. Rwb should of been the highest priority followed by lcb.

I'm hoping Spence starts getting games after the world cup break because otherwise you'd have to say not improving our biggest weakness from last season is disappointing

Agreed, in an ideal world, he comes back in place of Emerson. Then in January we can look to sell Emerson and promote Spence.

Conte pretty much said he was a club signing

Meaning he didn’t want him ….maybe thinks we don’t need him but we do

posted on 21/8/22

On paper perhaps playing Perisic right side and Sessgnon left is the way to go or at least try As conte doesn’t favour Spence at all

Why didn’t we loan Spence back out ….maybe we still will

Agreed. This is the frustrating part of Conte’s character - an unwillingness to show faith in certain players, to gamble a little. The whole world and his dog knows Royal is never going to set that position alight, as sound as he is defensively. He offers nothing going forward and that’s 80% of his job as a wing back.

You only have to look at Neco Williams at RWB for Forest to see what happens when a younger player is given the chance. He’s been their best player all season. Just try Spence out. His ceiling is much higher than Royal’s. Maybe play Royal when Romero is out and we have to play Sanchez such is his need for defensive support but have a bit of faith in young players or those that don’t necessarily appear to be your ‘type’ on paper. You never know, they might surprise you.

This is what gets me about Conte’s plan. The latest theory is that there appears to be a desire to only sign players over 6 foot and that he wants everyone on the pitch to be physically imposing. That’s all well and good but it’s worth mentioning that were it not for the talents of the diminutive Hazard in Conte’s Chelsea days, he’d have lost the title that year to us probably. Same for Eriksen. Didn’t like him at first at Inter and then had to play him owed to injuries and he kept his place. I just wish he wasn’t so stubborn regarding players AND formations.

We have Doherty and Sess on the bench so plenty of cover for the full backs. He will get a chance when someone is injured.

I actually like that Conte has shown faith in the players that finished last season well and got us CL. Royal was one of these players.

7 points out of 9, we cannot complain too much.

I’m sure Conte prioritizes points over performance. Performances will pick up over time.

Do you think that’s right? Presumably you’d only really change wing backs during a game when you’re behind or you’re struggling to break down a team. Of the three Spence is undoubtedly the one you’d say is most front-footed so he offers something the others don’t. As far as I’m concerned he’s the better bench option and one of Royal and Doherty should be left out of the squad, or, better still, sold to increase funds. That should be Royal if you ask me.

How is Spence going to get better if he’s limited to the training ground?

I question Conte’s recruitment policy when he thinks RWB isn’t a priority position. For me it was THE most important one to get right.

I think he is right to have faith in a player like Emerson who has not really let him down so far. Same goes for PEH. Royal isn't a defensive liability and yesturday even though he doesn't that creative instinct he was making alot of overlapping runs to give Kulu some space.

Yes, Spence could do the same thing in theory as can Doherty but are they as good defensively? We are three games in and next week we play times - Sun, Wed and Saturday.

I expect some rotation and an injury could happen so Spence may get a chance on the bench at some point. Patience is needed.

Let’s be honest here, if Wolves or Chelsea had a decent striker, we’d be staring at 1 win from 3. We’ve been indifferent and it’s not some master plan by Conte, as much as his disciples would like to think it is. If we continue to play like we did in the last two games, we’re going to lose more than we win. Unless you’re picking up 9 points and utterly battering teams I think there’s room for tweaks and the RWB position is one of them. Conte is a ruthless man. This has nothing to do with keeping faith in the team that finished last year as some sort of reward. He’s just a naturally cautious man. Better the devil you know. He knows Royal is limited but the fact that he doesn’t know much about Spence I think terrifies him more.

I’d just him to have a little more faith at times. Try players out. It makes you wonder how many youngsters like Kane, Alli, Walker, Rose would have even got their chance under a manager like Conte were he around during their youth.

Yeh we let Tripps go after an indifferent season when he was, by all accounts, playing with an injury for most of it.

We then replaced him with Aurier, Doherty and Royal, none of whom are as good. Ridiculous decision making,

That last statement makes me question Conte’s judgement massively, assuming it’s true.

A wing back is basically a modern day winger. Their average position isn’t far off the halfway line. 80% of their work is done going forward. When Royal goes over the halfway line, he gets altitude sickness. He checks back every single time to pass to either a defender or a midfielder. He’s not stretching teams in the same way Perisic is. If he overlapped more often, he’d create a lot more space for Kulu.

I’m sorry, the guy is just not good in that position. End of debate.

I did find Spence an odd signing.

The way I saw RWB, was sell Emerson, get in a first choice player and have Doherty as backup.

I'm surprised Emerson is ahead of Doherty, given how well Doherty was doing before his injury, but I guess our he's the man in possession and has done pretty well over the last 10 games or so.

If a striker didn’t score goals but tracked back sufficiently, you wouldn’t say they’ve done pretty well. Royal’s job is largely in the attacking third and it’s attacking he’s terrible at. Defensively solid but is that really his role? Perisic gave a lesson to everyone in how you play the wingback role yesterday and not once did we really notice how solid he was at the back because that just isn’t his role.

Think this is unfair on royal

He is young and trying to learn a new role ….the bloke is a right back

I feel like I’m the only one who rates him and given time he can learn the role ….he gets better with every game not worse

If he was playing badly I wouldn’t back him so much but he isn’t playing badly just not doing what we want to see

He has the tools ….people wrote Danny rose off and he became the best left wing back int the country for a season or two…..he was a winger who couldn’t defend but became an absolute rock

I think royal deserves some patience
