Personally I don't think it's reasonable to suggest a team 'gets away with it' over the course of a 63 competitive fixtures

Have to say, the logic on this thread is a bit strange, to say the least.

The whole team isn't playing well and VVd is part of the team. OP should make an article for each of our players. Why just VVD? Is it because he's been the best CB in the world the last few years?

Which CB would look good when the opposition is getting past the midfield with two passes? Attackers bearing down time and again?

I reckon Silva at Chelsea would look like Cannavaro in this Liverpool team. Wouldn't be a complete disaster at all.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I done it about vvd because you rarely hear a mention about it. It’s usually trent who gets it across all media platforms. Was more an article to see liverpool fans thoughts as he was so good and now looks off it. I can understand why you’d be defensive though.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

The defensiveness in this article is mainly around your view that we 'got away with it' last year, which given statistics around goals conceded, expected goals conceded and the number of competitive games played, it's just a little odd.

In terms of VVD this year; he's been way off his previous (very high) standards and the vast, vast majority of fans would agree.

But if I'm honest, I'm not sure that's what this article is about. I think what you actually wanted to get across was (a) your view that VVD was never as good as feted, and (b) this drop in form goes back to last year when we were lucky to beat Chelsea in the cup finals. But perhaps I'm just cynical....

VVD bring better than Silva definitely has something to do with this, and also losing two finals to Liverpool last season.

Obviously he will deny this but...

"I can understand your attitude too, even though we've only conceded 2 goals more than Chelsea, and outscored them significantly so I can see why you'd want to make this article."

This is my favourite bit...what are you talking about?

I think his drop in form does go back to last year. I dont watch liverpool as much as you undoubtedly do, so wanted to guage views as i've seen quite a fair bit of slander towards trent and salah in comparison.
I also think VVD is a very good player, and would until this season, still had been first pick in a pl 11 back four that i'd choose...despite mambas ramblings

I dont really buy into the ageing team thing. A few guys are just the wrong side of 30. We're not exactly talking about 35/35 year olds (milner aside).

Dont know about you guys but I felt fit as a fiddle when I was 30/31. Im sure these guys are the same.

The issue is far too many are miles out of form. Most teams can get away with 1 or 2 and the rest will carry the team through. Right now we have vvd, trent, robbo (before injury) fabinho and salah. That is pretty much the spine of our team.

Get them back to form and the results will turn. As I said yesterday though that turn needs to come soon or we will have too much to do even for a top 4 finish.

I’d still be cautious about shouting it too loudly but it looks like this great Liverpool team may have ran its course.

Too many 30+ year olds in there now who while still quality look like they’ve had their very best days. I’d still fancy Liverpool to be in the top 4 race at the very worst but the 90+ point days are likely behind them.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Yes, Liverpool will still be second behind City but the gap will be bigger this season

Are they a great side... 1 league title. Have to defend your title to be a great side imo

I would said that up until yesterday but failure to win next Sunday and they are a long way even from 2nd.

I don’t think Arsenal will keep pace with City but I don’t expect them to collapse either.

Chelsea will be interesting under Potter and we are finding ways to win games while showing signs of improved football.

I think Spurs are the most likely to wilt but Liverpool could be a long way from 2nd very soon.

I’ve never bought it to the, “‘he’s the best player in the world etc…” no matter who is named or what position they play. For my, VvD’s performances have certainly dipped, but he’s not alone on that. I more often than not think that Mo will loose the ball when tackled, but that’s just me.

Time to drop him? Well I think he defo needs a rest, and he’s not alone on that.

Let’s stick together people, get behind the team squad and club

In his time at Liverpool, he has won the lot

In all his full seasons, we’ve hit 90+ points

He was fighting it out with Messi for the Ballon D’or

He has been an ever present in the PL team of the season.

Named UCL player of the year

Named PFA player of the year

And astonishingly…. Still hasn’t lost a home game since signing.

No PL defender has reached his peak, even if his own form now is below standards.

Process has a plausible argument but even Fergie had to rebuild after a few years of success. We have a number of 30+ players but also have a lot of very young players coming through. The same manager that built that team will build another and there's no one currently better than him at building teams. He took over a very very average team and within 7 years he's filled Liverpool with potential that he developed into world class players.

Defending a league titles doesn't make a team great. Winning the CL makes a team great. Even Fergie admitted that a great teams has won the CL at least 4 times.

Klopp' s Liverpool have gone from not qualifying for the CL 6 out of the 7 seasons before he joined to winning every trophy available at least once.

Liverpool have won it all in the last 5 years, a period during which teams like Chelsea and United have not even managed a single title challenge.

You look at all that and still think defending a title is what makes a great team? A bit funny that. Klopps Liverpool is certainly a great team.

City haven't won the CL and therefore are not a great team.

I think VVD could have become a true great under Pep: up there with the real greats Baresi, Beckenbauer etc. Just my opinion

That's ridiculous. What could he have done for City? Their defence is the best in the league nearly every season. There is no room for improvement and VVD joining them would not have improved their defence. They would concede the same number of goals they do now on average.

In fact, VVD would risk being ignored and not given the platform to become as great as he's become at Liverpool. City always have a lot of options and there's little to no difference who plays for them.

Last few weeks they've had an unknown kid playing in defence and you can't even tell the difference.

Peak VVD is the best defender of the modern era in as far as English football is concerned.

Yes, but imagine how could he could have been under Pep.

Serial winner and Pep takes players to next level above Klopp.

He would have been a consistent champion. And mext level player like Iniesta Messi etc. Sadly we only one season of his best. Pep would have got multiple good seasons out of him: that is Pep's genius: relentlessly motivating stars
