I'd be absolutely delighted if Ronaldo proves me wrong during the course of the season. Perhaps, just perhaps, he's been working on being in peak condition for the World Cup (which will probably be his last - although I wouldn't completely write him off 2026 either!). Maybe it's after the World Cup we'll see the best current version of him.
As for new strikers I quite like the idea of Toney. I'm wondering if it would be worth submitting an early low bit in the window just to see if that unsettles him a bit. Underhand? Maybe. However, it may nudge him to try to force an issue.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I've heard that the Portuguese fans are criticising him and doubting his place in the team. Might give him a bit of extra drive coming into the wc? Hopefully he can get back to a decent level for the remainder of his time at United.

Me too but it's starting to look less and less likely.
The Portugal manager will still probably be afraid to drop him in 2026
They have far more attacking talent than we do. He should nowhere near their starting XI and will cost them at the WC imo.
The thing with Ronaldo is that his all round performances haven't been great for a few years and now that the goals are drying up he has very little to offer in most games.

There was similar murmurs before the Euros and he went on to win the Golden Boot.
However, 3 of those were penalties. I watched most of Portugal's games in that tournament and his performance levels were poor.
I suspect no United fan wants him to be poor. I'd rather be wrong and him score 15/20 goals than be right and him struggle.

This. I just don't understand the constant defending by some because of his past.

Of course we would. But if you highlight his deficiencies then some on here accuse you of hating him.
The thing that frustrates me most watching Ronaldo now is not that his legs are going (can't be helped) but his constant dropping deep and vacating the box when we are in possession.
I might sound harsh but whenever he does that he just ends up getting in the way. He either just passes backwards and sideways or loses the ball.
Even at his brilliant peak he was really never someone who could drop deep and play a pass in behind.
If he's going to be effective he needs to hold the CF position as frustrating as that can be if your not getting the ball.

I agree with this.
If he does drift though then someone surely must look to run into the space he vacates.
I think we look better with Martial there as the team is more confident he'll look after the ball a bit better so they can make the movement.
Some of the players also have to stop looking for him at every opportunity. If he makes a good run, and he has done to be fair, it's still not always the best option to go for him. His run can sometimes create space for others. Antony tried a difficult cross the other day when there was a much simpler short square pass to Bruno in the box available.
Yes I agree Diafol and in fairness to Rashford when he's played with Ronaldo this season he has been making those runs. 4 of Rashford's 5 goals this season have come from CF type area's with Ronaldo on the pitch.
I suppose my issue is that someone with the football intelligence of Ronaldo should know that he is no use to the team when he's plonked between the centre circle and the box and it feels like he is doing it for selfish reasons just to be involved in the game more.
He doesn't have Harry Kane like ability to drop deep and play someone in behind. It was arguably his only weakness even at his peak that he was never a great passer of the ball.
There was a phase of play early in the Newcastle game where we were passing it around crisply with a long spell of possession, had gotten into their half and were beginning to speed it up, at that point he should have been occupying their CB's, instead he dropped deep and when the ball was played to him he played a woeful pass out of play.
We need to pray Martial stays fit.

If Ronaldo is playing then he must adapt to what the manager wants but there will also need to be an element of the manager adapting to Ronaldo as he can't do what ETH really wants a forward to do.
Basically we need a new CF!
Petulant from Ronaldo today. Even the boss didn't defend him just!
