I think people can see the underlying issues and ice berg coming. I rememeber (was it last season?) kane and son were causing chaos on the break and despite spurs barely having the ball, were winning you games single(double) handedly.

But people knew it wasn't manageable long term.
Spurs perfomances will need to improve if they are to stay in the top 4.

What is a good thing though, if this is spurs poor patch, then you have come through it unscathed.

People prefer to watch world class players like Cancelo fail to control a ball coming out of the sky to gift a goal to the opposition, or Liverpool register 37% possession at home and 2 shots on target and call that entertainment.

Yesterdays big game was full of jeopardy but that was it. Man City knocked it about without penetrating agreat deal and Liverpool kicked it long. It was exciting because it was a big game but if that was Villa vs Wolves then it would have been deemed as fairly unmemorable.

imagine judging a one off game on the ways a team plays. Especially in a big game between the two best teams in the league . Sorry devon, thats a nonsensical post.

That's the problem.....negative fans see "the iceberg coming" which is basically assuming poor performances will continue and will catch up with us.

The rest of us have slightly longer memories, know that we are capable of much better performances, so are hopeful and expectant that the better performances will arrive and for us to start to up our levels.

posted on 17/10/22

Definitely two ways to look at it.
For example, our results under tuchel were papering over poor performances for nearly a year.
Our players were playing poorly and I think tuchel himself was the only reason for our getting to finals the last two years. But we knew that it wouldn't last. Perofmances were just not good enough.

That's the lazy armchair fan view, though. It's not reality. I'm guessing what you're referring to is the Jose era where we weren't creating chances while conceding loads and were bailed out by Son and Kane taking them all. The difference is now we're creating plenty of chances and getting results even though (until the last few games) Son had been poor and Kane just about average. The system creates for us.

The moaning is because we have some fans that think we're chit if we don't dominate possession. Then there's fans that moan if the manager doesn't make subs and moan if he makes subs they don't like. Can't please everyone.

I think a better analogy for where we're at right now is Poch's second season. We're starting to see the team play really well in the way the manager wants but we're still lacking in a couple of key areas (mainly CB) that's holding us back from being a team that could win the league.

posted on 17/10/22

Can't comment in that much detail but the games i've seen spurs they've been really poor and lucky to get a result. I was also at SB and still find it baffling how we didn't win by a few goals at least.

As I say, it can go two ways, this could be your rough patch and you improve unscathed, or it could show some of the worrying signs that are underlying issues.

posted on 17/10/22

The third way of course (and closer to reality if you watch the games) being that we're actually playing decent and getting good results and it's just not the fashionable way of being good at football right now.

You'd think people would learn from the Mourinho era.

With this type of football results are everything, so you probably wrote the same article in 2020, but the people complaining were justified when he was sacked the same season.

Well people are judging us on the start of this season forgetting (and the op infers with his reference to our home form spanning this and last season ) that have shown ourselves capable of playing much better football. Yes its been a bit dull this season but we havent really got going. Most with a brain can see we are capable of much better but instead many ignore this as a possibility and prefer to stick to the narrative that Spurs are boring, end of.

Liverpool have shown poor form this but the narrative with them is that that will get going and start getting results.....why? because they have done so in the past. The back end of last season (last 10-15 games) we were largely great to watch, high scoring winning football...but that's forgotten, it's Conte, Spurs are boring, end of !!

Not sure what’s worse

People moaning or people moaning about people moaning

I think up to about 3 matches ago fans had a right to be concerned with our style of play and that it wasn’t long term success

There are signs in the last 2/3 games that things are starting to work / click though ….son certainly looks brighter and we have Kulu to come back into the squad too

I’m certainly happier than I was two weeks ago where I was bored to tears watching us ….knowing we can play better is one thing but it’s actually playing better that was needed and it’s starting to happen

I wish people wouldn’t quote our goals scored column means we must be exciting / not boring though

Just cos we score goals doesn’t make us or any team for that matter good to watch

This is defo. in peoples minds. Spurs defend in numbers and attack in numbers. We have been quite poor in ball retention this season and are quite comfortable defending, so our moments of action have tended to be spread out, rather than after a concentrated period of possession or pressure, and in between is filled with the opposition trying (and mainly failing) to break us down. But we tend to generate chances - if you go through our fixtures, then shots & shots on target are pretty high. We just play in a very controlled way which some dont like.

I think it’s tactical, Conte has us playing within ourselves to conserve energy. I think you will see us really going for it in the second half of the season.

The end of last season when we had to step up to get top 4 we were arguably the most entertaining side in the league and we’re taking teams apart routinely - we destroyed all of Arsenal, Newcastle, Everton, Leeds, Norwich.

I think we will step up big time post World Cup and will have the energy to do so.

Don’t listen to the noise - loads of jealousy in amongst it

Not sure anyone moaning about moaning, just discussing why some people, even our own fans, are viewing us negatively.

I agree we have picked up in our levels probably since the NLD. Even the draw at EF was much better in terms of quality and control and its been small improvements since then.

As said above, many view our start as being effective without really playing that well but knowing we are capable of better play and we expect this to come....and it is beginning to. rather than just focussing on it being dull and thinking that is our style and expecting it to continue.

Spurs fans though:

- winning is boring
- best start in 60 years doesnt matter
- Level with City is meaningless
- goals are not entertainment

You get the sense we could win the league with a succession of boring one-nils and some would not be happy

Don't buy this conserving energy stuff.....our running stats are as high as anyones.

You will never hear a manager saying, go out there and win but dont try too hard. This is elite level sport, its 100%

It’s more about game management and limiting injury potential, our players run but don’t chase the ball half as much as we used to.

We control games and when we are ahead we slow them down as much as possible rather than going for the kill - none more so than on Saturday when we had 90% possession for 5 minutes after our goal.

We play in phases and if we don’t score in the first 15 mins of a game we don’t really hunt for a goal for the rest of that half, instead conserving energy and hitting teams hard in the second half

Culer how are you healing your bleeding eyes when watching 10 goals less than Spurs this Season Man United?

Was it a brilliantly entertaining 0-0 yesterday?
