Yeah that’s pretty much the problem. But then it’s also where luck comes into it, for example, say we start to peak when Pep leaves. Because as well as City are run, Pep is the man that has led to the success that they’ve had. The man is just a cheat code for league titles. There isn’t anyone that I can see replacing that level of success, so hopefully there’s a huge drop off at a time where we’re looking like going places under ETH.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah they might not be able to replicate Pep’s league success perfectly but if they got (which they would) another top manager in or several (chelsea style) over a period of time, I can see them continuing to win very regularly as long as the team is maintained bit by bit like now. Next for them will be when KDB needs replacing. They have such an excellent platform right now that I can see them doing what we did through the nineties and 00s.

I think we should all shut up and just let him get on with it… every time we build people up, we set them up to fail.

Unpopular opinion, I know.

Would love us to start upping the GD a bit but that’s where we’re short atm, funnily enough the only 2 occasions where we’ve managed more than 2 goals in the league have been against the top 2 sides

FACKING low block and the lack of a good striker

SatNav, yeah I think the same. Which is why we’ll need to be lucky with any timing that they fall off a bit. It’s possible to luck into that under these owners, that’s all I’m clinging to regarding a league title.

But ultimately what I’m most wanting to see is a commitment to exciting, attacking football. ETH is the first time we’ve brought in a manager that has those ideals. If and when he’s replaced the least we should expect is a continuation of that. If success comes with that then it comes. But if not at least we aren’t going to be bored to tears.

The game against Spurs perfectly illustrated why I didn’t want Conte. Would we be better right now had we brought him in to replace Ole? I suspect so, but would it be worth it when we saw a performance like that from ETH’s United against said manager? Not a chance.

If and when United start to win stuff under ETH, he will become the man.

Until then....
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Sure but what’s your gut feeling so far? Do you think he will become the man or go wrong in some way, likely similar to those before him?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
TBH I cant see United been better than City at anytime soon in the future whilst Pep is still there. And Im sure the set up at City will cope better with Pep being replaced that United under Glazers were when Fergie and Gill left irrespective of who the new manager would be. Basically our problems on the pitch have been self inflicted by those off it for years. I also regard Ronaldo a recent consequence of off pitch meddling (I dont for one minute believe that Ole requested his signing) and I dont think that ETHs job can start rebuilding properly until Ronaldo leaves and he gets his own centre forward. It will be a long road for United but ETH has made a decent start.

If only Fred could play like that on a consistent basis.

The trouble with him is he’s either a MOTM contender or the worst player on the pitch.

There’s rarely in an in between.

ETH has not been flawless but he has impressed me so far.

To be fair to him though, how often have we played to his strengths? We say this about the likes of Pogba but it’s true of Fred as well. I don’t remember him being paired with Matic very often, so he’s hardly ever played in his best role - he has usually been with McTominay, where they’re both having to be DMs precisely because neither of them is a DM. Put him with a proper DM (and one he knows at that) and he plays well.

Fred does suit certain games as well. It’s not a surprise he tends to play better in the bigger games when we aren’t dominating possession like against the smaller sides. Even against Spurs it wasn’t like we had 60% possession.

McFred is sometimes a gamble that pays off in big games for this reason really.

Not gonna disagree totally but he was terrible against Newcastle last Sunday beside Casemiro.

He’s also been very good beside McTominay on occasions.

Both true. For the first - I said at the time that Fred often takes a few games to get going.

For the second - he’s capable of playing with McTominay and it sometimes works, but it doesn’t really get the best out of either of them. To me they’re both box-to-box destroyers who need to be all over the pitch. McTominay probably has more goals in him but all round I prefer Fred. Together though, they both have to play as a sort of double DM and it doesn’t help either player or the team.

I agree with all that Clockwork.

However it’s his 5th season now and we still have no idea what Fred we’re going to get every time he lines up for us.

He’s a real asset when playing well so hopefully he can finally find some sort of consistency.

Yeah it’s paid off plenty of times. But we’ll need to start looking to be more competitive with the ball in that area which ETH clearly knows.

Winning the World Cup with Casemiro will help!

I think he's the one to get us playing more coherently and more consistently "well" in terms of actually putting in entertaining performances where you think at full time "I really enjoyed that."

That has rarely been the case for God knows how long. Even when results were good under Jose and Ole, I rarely had that feeling. Ole after lockdown being the one exception, where I really did enjoy our football in the latter part of that season.

In terms of where that will take us in terms of league position, it's hard to say as the likes of City, Arsenal and Liverpool are all strong, in spite of Liverpool's early season struggles. And Newcastle will only get better. I haven't mentioned Spurs yet as they are distinctly unimpressive and their football stinks. But it is still working for them to an extent.

On the whole, it's been better than expected. More importantly, there has been a general upward trajectory since even the wins against Southampton and Leicester which weren't overly impressive. Regardless of the result tomorrow, I'm hopeful and fairly confident that will continue

Fred is consistent alright, always somewhere between a 1 and 4. How anyone is fooled by his goal ( a lame effort on goal) and his assist ( failed attempt to beat a defender) is beyond me. His only consistent is his unpredictability, misplaced passes his speciality, followed by the one arm raised apology.

I like fred. He's a baller.
He just needs to stay away from the final third or just practice how to shoot a football towards a goal, you know things we did in school and football training?

These geezas probably spend all their free time honing their FIFA skills.
