Sterling selection basically came down to he’s scored a lot of goals for England especially in big tournament at the last euro’s. And don’t really think there’s been anyone better the last two decades that isn’t already on the bench or team, even including the defense. Jury still out on Trent, don’t rate Maguire Dier or Walker at all and never have and King only played about 15 games
Crouch I thought was better than the likes of Heskey and Defoe
Back 5 almost picks itself, though Sol would run Rio and Terry close imo. More debatable when you get to midfield and up front but I wouldn't argue with your selection. Perhaps you could change the formation and Owen could drop out. Perhaps people would argue with Beckham but I'm a huge Beckham fan and can't think of anybody to replace him
Beckham’s Englands greatest player of the 21st century in my opinion
Ashley Cole would be the most nailed on player in the lineup imo for the record. Best left back the PL has seen. His intelligence was on another level too. The number of goal line clearances he made was insane. And he never got beaten by wingers. Ronaldo never got any change out of him. Super player
Seaman retired from England over 20 years ago, so Pickford probably gets #1
Walker over Neville.
Wouldn't have Owen for last 20 years. Kane and Rooney would be perfect for Southgate as they can play the defensive striker role well.
Put Scholes on the left...
I also think over the years Owen has become probably England’s most under rated player of all time. Guy was absolute class, people always talk about how good Rooney and Kane were/are which is right but I’d still have a prime Owen over either
..............Seaman...........
Neville....Rio...Terry......Cole
...............Scholes.........
Becks....Gerrard.....Lampard
...........Rooney........Kane
Subs
Pickford, Campbell, Owen, Sterling, Rice, Crouch, Cole

Really? Obviously I remember that Greece goal, the pen against the Argies etc. He definitely stepped up when needed most. Proper captain

It was his dodgy hamstrings that did him in. He was a quality striker but never got more than 18 league goals in a season. Yet the talent he had should have seen him hitting mid twenties season after season
Seman retired after the 2002 world cup, I think?
It’s weird how the last 10 years has seen such a decline in the quality of England defenders and goal keepers. Although I think it’s a shame as Pope could have been one of the greats, not saying Pickford hasn’t been good but honestly think Pope is world class
Defenders England have produced have been very mediocre though especially CB’s after likes of JT, Rio, Campbell, King etc
Next Gen may be better in 5-10 years - likes of Ben White, Reece James, Chilwell, Trent etc

Agreed, think it’s because he started at such a young age too. On his day though was just unstoppable, always forget he won a Ballon D’or too

I was thinking this myself. You see the quality of those centre backs in that generation. And now you have Maguire. England do have very good options at right back now, more so than any time I can remember. But not so across the rest of the back line

He was just a natural. I still remember his first goal for Liverpool (which incidentally was the day we won the league in 97) and it was just such a composed finish from a 17 year old who looked like be could do it in his sleep
Owen
England U15’s 15 goals in 8
England U16’s 15 goals in 11
England U18’s 10 goals in 14
England U20’s 3 goals in 4
England U21’s 1 goal in 1
England 40 goals in 89
For what generally was always a negative boring English side, some going
Strange that we have picked players mainly from the golden era yet this era has been far more successful.
Never took penalties for England either

Weird isn’t it, however at the same time I do feel the quality of other international teams was a lot stronger back then
I reckon if the same article was done for most other top international teams other than probably France (although again with the defense), most players that would be picked would be from the last 10-15 years ago bracket especially likes of Brazil, Italy, Germany, Holland, Spain
