Bentancur banned anyway for our first match back so doesn’t matter how far Uruguay go

That is typical.

I wouldn’t have thought they would be given time off. Maybe the players who get to the final may have a few days off after travelling back but the majority shoukd be straight back into it in time for xmas fixtures

I'm surprised you're not looking forward to the world cup sandy. I know that it feels a bit weird and interrupting a domestic season isn't ideal but ultimately, it is a world cup. Once it gets going I reckon more people will jump on board.

I imagine unless your country gets to the semi's or further the players will be available for boxing day.

Of ours Lloris, Perisic, Richarlison and Kane are the only ones I can think of who start for their country and have a decent chance of going far in the tournament.

I’m honestly hoping England go out in the group stages, want Kane to be rested and raring to go when the season starts

I used to really enjoy the world cup, but I just don't like International football these days. Practically every footballer gets capped, when it was the case you had to be very decent to get picked to play for your country. The amount of very average England players that have 50 caps in the modern era is astonishing. Dier and Maguire both in the Englsnd squad, shows how low the bar is these days.

England have a poor squad, so you may get your wish.

I am English and would NEVER hope England go out early in a World Cup. WTF is wrong with people.

If England ever won a World Cup again, it would be one kd the best things to ever happen to this country since our generation has been alive.

I mean, even if you feel like that, you'd probably get a free day off if we won it!

You can't stop supporting your country just because the "bar is low" surely? That's fickle

I'd like England to do well, but the winter world cup, it being in Qatar and having Southgate bore us to rears means I'm not overly fussed about this world cup.

Was far more invested in the cricket yesterday, that was the main world cup for me

I think we can put up a mean face and say I don't give a fig about England, but when the England game is on, I am sure you'll watch and support right?

posted on 14/11/22

I preferably want England to win it - we won’t though, so an early exit is then preferable.

Looking at it, I think we will get dumped out in the Quarters

I love international football. The calendar of the game needs to be addressed as there are too many breaks at the wrong time. The last two major tournaments have been great, even if the football we play is passive at times. I still really enjoy the feeling of the country getting behind the team and if we did ever win anything, it would be amazing.

I love cricket but T20 will never give me the joy of the 50 over game or winning The Ashes. Was still nice to watch us clinically prove we are the best white ball team in the world though, with the pressure on.

Agreed. I’m seeing a lot of this though, I think people just try and distance themselves from the national team to protect themselves from the hurt of losing again.

Happens before every tournament, then the deeper we go, the less you see of it. I call it out before every tournament.

How can you not look forward to a world cup, a once in 4 year experience ?

Yeah, I get the politics around this particular venue, not to mention the obvious bribery that enabled it to happen, but from a purely footballing perspective, it is the top tournament around.

In the main, the people who come out with all that "I ain't interested in the world cup" cr*p will, as we all know, jump on board the minute England win a game, and will be there, jumping up and down, chucking their beer in the air in a city viewing space somewhere.

It's a month of watching the best international teams around, with every game live on telly.

So what if England don't win it. So what if the player everyone ( outside of Spurs ) seems to hate for no actual logical reason is England captain and will start every game. So what if the tribal nature of some people's thinking would see them actually want England to lose, simply because a club rival player turns out for the National team.

For me it is a month of watching the best sport around, and I intend to enjoy every minute of it, irrespective of how well England do, and with absolutely no interest in anything outside of actual football, being spun by fans, media, pundits or political groups.

International footballs problem is they have too many games. Should be one friendly break a year where they play a couple of times and a much reduced qualifying format for the finals.

I particularly hate in normal seasons the break every 3/4 weeks for an international game, it’s faaacking annoying.

The Finals are usually good though and this one has some good group games - Spain vs Germany, Belgium vs Croatia, Brazil vs Cameroon (iconic kit clash), Uruguay vs Portugal (the schithouse derby)
