That’s not to say we shouldn’t criticise Qatar. Course we should. But by the same token, I can’t think of many countries that can host a World Cup that have no skeletons either in its closet or roaming the streets. When you’re from a non-white, non-Euro-Christian background, your antenna is always very high on noticing criticism that is tinged with “but look, they’re just so different from us because they aren’t from that euro Christian”. And it’s a load of blllllksss.

Total disgrace, this WC is a joke ,happening in December, middle of a football season, no alcohol, we live in a totally PC artificial craaaap world. What's next , cover your whole flipping face ! Am skipping this WC, here's to the next in a normal country where there is freedom.

I've said on other posts I ain't interested in this world cup, I'll go to the sports bar as I usually do at weekends, but I won't be going out of my way to make extra plans for the football!..

If my mates are there watching any game then I'll watch, but I don't give a flying feck who's playing and even less of a feck over who wins!..

Qatar have been awarded the world cup, as far as I'm concerned they can give them the cup now and close shop!..

Totally agree...that WC is a mess. Money and corruption rule sadly.

More interesting watching L1 football where everything is genuine like the good old 1st division in the 70's, 80's...

Cultural diversity in the UK does not mean harmony. It just means you have the rights to follow your own beliefs. Is this ‘Eurocentric’ or ‘Christian’? It’s the UK. I am Irish and I lived in the UK during the 80’s, so I understand what it feels like to be demeaned because of my nationality. Perhaps my point of difference was not as visible as yours, but once I opened my mouth, it was not long before someone cracked an Irish ‘joke’. However, this was not the view of all people, all of the time, and was certainly not the view of my friends. I can understand that your antenna are attuned to anything that has a whiff of racism, I guess you have experienced your fair share of it, both subtle and explicit. So you feel the hypocrisy of a government that takes the moral high ground when it has plenty of ‘skeletons’ of its own.
Qatar is different to the UK. It is not because of a European or Christian or whatever lens you choose to see it through. From the moment you step off the plane into that blanket of heat, you experience the Middle East. It’s not the ‘lived-in’ experience of the locals, but the more time you spend among them, the more you realise how different it is. You won’t find a fish and chip shop or a pint of Tetleys. You can choose to explore this world, or you can stay in your hotel and switch on the BBC.
So when I say, Qatar has its own rules and culture, this is not intended to load value onto the UK way of life. It simply means you respect their way of life if you want to enjoy your stay there. If that means no alcohol at football games, so be it.

Well put. I obviously took your original post in the wrong context so my apologies.

I'm not going to the WC and I've been teetotal my whole life so I haven't got a vested interest in the serving of alcohol at the WC, but the decision to change their minds on the availability of alcohol so close to the start of the tournament when fans have already booked flights, hotels, match tickets etc. is just completely wrong in my book.

Qatar is a country that does as it pleases to people. For that reason alone, it should never have been even awarded the chance to bid to host an international event such as this, never mind actually host it.

It’s their country, their World Cup, their culture and their rules. If the World Cup was being held in England, would supporters of Middle East countries be outraged by women not wearing Hijab? Of course not.
Having said that, whoever came up with the idea of alcohol-free Guinness should be tried for heresy. ........................................................................................They should never have put themselves forward for the world cup in the first place knowing drinking beer and wine was a part of most of the world's cultures. Especially at football games. So respect is needed from their side of the argument.

What a load of baloney...............................................................................Baloney ?. So not wanting alcohol drank in your country and then wanting to stage a world cup knowing most of the world drink alcohol. Sounds like a good idea. They should have never been given the world cup in the first place because of their human rights record, now that's "baloney"

Their Royal family has more clout than the British family, so them wanting it banning has only added the crap thickener to the crap that was already there!..
