The problem imo is that the international mangers are afraid of upsetting them. Ronaldo in particular doesn't seem to have accepted that he's better off playing a cameo role these days.

He'll be off to the US soon...for a last payday, that'll be it
Whilst CR7 is a complete caant, I cannot get that every team Messi plays in the forward players have fear in their eyes when they get the ball trying to find where he is to give him it to make something happen like they're under orders or do they genuinely think he will still conjure up some magic?
Both are done in different ways.
I thought Messi was exceptional yesterday, missed chances aside.
Enrique never played Thiago even when he was at his peak when he first joined us and that season when Bayern won the CL.
Having Messi on the pitch means opposition spend hours planning for him and a system to combat him because he doesn't play as a forward. He drops in pockets which is very hard to coach.
Ronaldo I can agree with as he’s well past it and tbh I don’t know what Portugal are like without him on the basis of a few games, but it surely strengthen their chances.
Messi is still capable of conjuring up moments. Yesterday he was really good despite not scoring. The problem is when Argentina are out of possession he is a massive liability. But its worth the trade off for when they do have the ball. Still don’t think either teams make it far, just something about Argentina where they disappoint. Hope they’ve over come that.
I mean if I was manager I would probably play both.

Messi has more assists than 5 of the top forwards combined.

OP I don’t think you’ve watched either player play through out their careers, had you done that you’d know Messi never was a work horse who ran box to box. What you saw yesterday him “walking after 20mins” had been how he’s been playing for close to the last 10yrs!
And had others have said I also felt he was fantastic yesterday. Saudi game aside he’s carrying this team on his back single handed and he’s managed to get them into the last 16. I’m certain had he not been playing this current Argentina doesn’t make it to the KO stages.
As for Ronaldo I agree he’s better suited to cameos I don’t see the value in him starting but he’s an amazing option off the bench.

Messi is slower, loses posession more and walks more in games. Im not saying he was the worlds best presser, but he would occupy positions on the pitch and cut pressing lanes.
Now he does nothing when the team is not in possession.

Listen, still a great player so 'done' is a bit harsh. CR7 is done. Messi is almost done.

Absolutely bossed it last night, imo. They touched on it punditry but the weight of his through balls were perfect, there were a few glimpses of the old Messi when he was dropping his shoulder and weaving away from a couple of defenders. Brilliant to watch.
Shame he couldn’t round it off with a couple of goals, a) because he deserved it for his overall performance, and b) to knockout an awful Poland side who approached the game in the most cowardly way and sneaked their way through.

Poland was Awful. It was a shocking performance and their reward is a match against France who really should dump them out of the competition.

While it's true that you're going to suffer if you don't have the legs to live with the higher-energy teams, experience tends to go a very long way in tournament football.
Portugal’s problem is that with Silva and Jota injured, and Felix incapable of leading the line on his own, the only other option is a kid who has just turned 21 with one international start.
Ronaldo hasn’t actually had a terrible tournament so far (much to my surprise). He was decent against Ghana, and did OK against Uruguay.
With Portugal safely through to the next round, I expect Santos will give Ramos a start against South Korea.
Messi hasn't ran in years but he still offers something the other players don't.
I don't think Argentina have that good of a squad either and I reckon there is 5-6 better sides left in this WC.
Portugal would be better off without Ronaldo starting these days. They have a vast amount of youngish talent in that squad but the manager doesn't have the guts to bench him.
+1 for the opinion that Messi is still a big asset to the team. The vision and execution for through balls is fantastic, and he can spring to life and carry the ball through congested spaces. He will create enough chances for Argentina that it's more than worth the trade-off.
Argentina the last couple of years have played a lot more like yesterday than their first couple of games and Messi is still a huge part of that.
Messi was brilliant yesterday, albeit Poland weren’t great. I don’t think Argentina have the quality across the pitch to go the distance though.
