After messi and ronaldo Zidane is probably the third best player of my lifetime. MAybe original ronaldo in there too.

Zidane controlled games, created moments of magic, was a man amongst boys.

People nowadays wouldn't rate vieira, young roy keane and others because they look at their stats.

Ignorance at it's finest.

Worst thing about messi and ronaldo is they have destroyed lots of peoples abilities to use their own eyes and look at the nuances of football to judge a player.

Peak Suarez was much better than Zidane. Your romaticism is showing
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Your joking right?

Zidane would be Brighton/Fulham level if he played now.

Henry, Newcastle

Cruyff, Spurs
----------------------------------------------------------------------
KDB will be Charlton level if he played in 30 yrs time
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He was Charlton level at the WC
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Charlton woulda subbed him off for Conor Mcgrandles by now.

Don't you think that has more to do with this generations perspective and maybe a little lack of football knowledge Nick?

On pure footballing skill and wizardry Cruyff leaves the rest way behind. Also, the others that the OP nominated are French which should automatically disqualify them from being considered.

I doubt many had heard of Zidane when he was Mbappe's age. He was a great player but he didn't spend enough time at the top to be considered the greatest. Mbappe has the chance to overtake all of them barring probably Messi and Ronaldo, given the start to his career.

That’s not what this loon is saying though, he’s said Mbappe has already surpassed any level Zidane reached as a footballer, which is utter crap

That is true. Mbappe is the most feared/best player in a team of France/PSG which consists of some of the greats like Messi, Neymar, Benzema, Kante, Varane, Di Maria.
Zidane was not feared this much at any stage of his career.

Yeah too early yet, even if he continues this form and France win the WC. He obviously will need to do more in the CL outside of this.

Mbappe needs to leave PSG and play in a different league. Since he's been there his game has stagnated, and the only thing that has developed is his ability to be a complete nob. Which he excels at. He has enormous raw talent, which at the moment is being channeled into winning two dozen ligue 1 titles and feck all else.

People like the OP are best treated with utter contempt to be fair. Fart in his general direction kind of stuff.

It's strange, and possibly an indication of the age of some of the posters, that nobody has mentioned George Best. He was certainly the most skilful player that I have ever seen. His profile in international games was low because of the dearth of talented fellow nationals but Pele once rated him as the best and said, "George Best until today is a footballer without comparison and his technical skills will never be forgotten".
There are many other similar quotes from the World's top football people of his era.
So, George is No.1 and then it's a toss-up between Maradonna and Messi. Cruyff was good but if it wasn't for "that turn" would people still rate him so highly?

Few players in world football have ever had their few games extrapolated as how they are across their careers like Zidane.

Amazing how he won the Ballon D’or off the back of scoring two goals in a WC final (he wasn’t good for Juve and spent half the 98 tournament suspended for France)

Best is absolutely up there - Cruyff doesn't have an airport named after him!

Seriously, guys like him and Jimmy Johnstone don't get the recognition because of their era's relative lack of media and their country of birth and partly longevity and their flaws. Look at any top 100 online and many good players become 'great' helped by the team(s) around them. Partly unfair because it is only natural that they gravitate towards the highest paying clubs.

The players that inspired their teams to over-achieving - Maradona, Hagi, Stoichkov, Schmeichel, Shearer, Modric, Cantona, Koeman, Blockin, Kocsis - many more should be just as much up there imho and even some of the above are debatable!

Garincha - meh, stood out in a WC winning side that had lost Pele because he had a few moves that were mental at the time. Kaka, Facchetti, Busquets, Lahm, Rijkaard, Cafu and the like... to go any further it sounds bitter cos these were very good players but playing in very good teams. Not necessarily disputing a top 100 place but more their rank within.

This has to be one of the most stupid articles I have read on this site since it was created. Well done.

A remarkable achievement
