France we’re knocked out of the Euros by Switzerland, beaten at this tournament by Tunisia, scraped past a poor Denmark team and have conceded in every game.
If they didn’t have Mbappe then absolutely no one would be taking them seriously. That defence is Spurs level bad - only team Denmark scored against, only team Tunisia scored against, 1 of only two teams Poland scored against - the other being the Saudis.

Were Croatia not a decent team at the last WC? They gave France a good game in the final, which would have been closer had a very questionable refereeing decision not enabled France to get their noses in front.
There are lots of preconceptions flying around that lead to circular logic. If the fixed starting point is that Southgate's England are limited, then whenever we beat a side it's quite easy to conclude that they were never a very credible opponent anyway. So we have some voices claiming there's no way we can beat France who in the event of an England victory will adjust to French injuries / poor defence / Rabiot is a farmer.
I see France as favourites for the quarter final, but it wouldn't be a massive upset if England won. Above all, it's likely to come down to small margins where luck / a clinical finish here or there make the difference. This WC is a reminder that quite often the team that creates the most or best chances isn't necessarily the winner. Both England and France have been among the best teams in this respect: Mbappe and Giroud look like they will gobble up a higher than average proportion of the chances they get, and England (just about all of whose attacking players have got on the scoresheet) have been ruthless in front of goal.

Yes but more so the midfield and front line in terms of stopping the passing channels to him in the first place. If he gets one on one with the amount of space he had against Poland regularly, then anyones going to struggle against it.

France we’re knocked out of the Euros by Switzerland, beaten at this tournament by Tunisia, scraped past a poor Denmark team and have conceded in every game.

Were Croatia not a decent team at the last WC? They gave France a good game in the final, which would have been closer had a very questionable refereeing decision not enabled France to get their noses in front.
There are lots of preconceptions flying around that lead to circular logic. If the fixed starting point is that Southgate's England are limited, then whenever we beat a side it's quite easy to conclude that they were never a very credible opponent anyway. So we have some voices claiming there's no way we can beat France who in the event of an England victory will adjust to French injuries / poor defence / Rabiot is a farmer.
I see France as favourites for the quarter final, but it wouldn't be a massive upset if England won. Above all, it's likely to come down to small margins where luck / a clinical finish here or there make the difference. This WC is a reminder that quite often the team that creates the most or best chances isn't necessarily the winner. Both England and France have been among the best teams in this respect: Mbappe and Giroud look like they will gobble up a higher than average proportion of the chances they get, and England (just about all of whose attacking players have got on the scoresheet) have been ruthless in front of goal.

Yes but more so the midfield and front line in terms of stopping the passing channels to him in the first place. If he gets one on one with the amount of space he had against Poland regularly, then anyones going to struggle against it.

So we have some voices claiming there's no way we can beat France who in the event of an England victory will adjust to French injuries / poor defence / Rabiot is a farmer.
I see France as favourites for the quarter final, but it wouldn't be a massive upset if England won. Above all, it's likely to come down to small margins where luck / a clinical finish here or there make the difference. This WC is a reminder that quite often the team that creates the most or best chances isn't necessarily the winner. Both England and France have been among the best teams in this respect: Mbappe and Giroud look like they will gobble up a higher than average proportion of the chances they get, and England (just about all of whose attacking players have got on the scoresheet) have been ruthless in front of goal.

Both managers are quite pragmatic, and both know very well the threat the other side can pose playing fast strikers behind their defence. Could be quite a cagey game, and maybe this is one where we're likely to see the aerial battles featuring Giroud / Varane / Maguire / Kane being decisive.
