the whole he needs to win a world cup thing ir retarted IMO.
So are we saying if Messi scores hatrick in the final the game goes to penalties he scores his but another argie misses and they lose it .....
why does that player missing the penalty make Messi less of a player?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
judging players on team accolades is ridiculous imo. yes if they repeatedly fail in good teams and dont win anything then use it. But for someone who has won multiple titles then it's a moot point.
Footballers should be judged by their individual performances. Messi doesn't need to win anything else for me to know he was the best of a generation

Winning something singlehandedly is another phrase I can't stand. No footballer has ever won any team trophy singlehandedly.
also people say that height is something of a hinderance in football.
4 guys essentially are the most talked about as the GOATs.
Messi - 5'7

Pele - 5'8
Maradona - 5'6
that would suggest its more of a benefit to being smaller ..........?

most likely .... and outwith the HGH stuff that we know bout its highly likely he is using PED's along with the vast majority of them.
Most defenders/defensive players are athletes who as kids didn't have the technical qualities to excel as attackers, so some youth coach or something found a way for them to be useful on the pitch. Yes, attackers are better than defenders. No, a non-attacking player can't be GOAT. There is no equivalent of Messi/Ronaldo/Pele/Maradonna in the deeper roles.
Many top midfielders or defenders were converted attackers. Modric for example was seen as a no.10. I remember when he was at Spurs and he usually played in that role or as one of the wide attackers in a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3. He wasn't productive as a scorer or creator though. I remember it was injuries that compelled Redknapp to deploy him deeper (the first season Spurs qualified for CL) and he never looked back. Scholes earlier in his career was deployed further forward, but became the best midfielder of his generation in England when his qualities were deployed deeper. Beckenbauer was an attacking player who later played defense. The likes of Pirlo and Schweinsteiger started off as attacking players and were deployed as deeper-lying maestros later in their careers. Shows attacking players have more versatile qualities than those operating deeper. Not sure I recall too many instances of a defender who became a world class forward.

Yeah, I can give you Bale. Though the incompetence of his youth coaches has to the reason that one of the most explosive footballers I've ever seen with a ridiculous left foot and a very serious goal threat was playing at fullback. I recall Bale as a kid was basically barred from playing more than one-touch footy and using his left foot because of how far above his peers he was. Seems the Southampton coaches decided to keep restricting him cos they felt too sorry for the opponent. What makes it baffling is Bale was never particularly good defensively, so have no idea why anyone ever saw him as a LB.

He didn’t have that when he broke through into senior football, though. Bale was always rated as a player with potential as an attacking full back, wing back or left mid. That he became one of the most devastating forwards in the world is a testament to his own development as a player. He played far above the level that was ever expected of him.
Agree with the general gist about attackers. Mist professional footballers will have been attackers at some stage in their youth career, this is especially true of players coming through the top academies.
