You realise that the Qatari organisers had zero influence on the football being played on their pitches, right?

The football has been great. Outside of that, it has been a disaster.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

What has been a disaster about it?

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Well I don’t think you need me to list the many and various human rights abuses involved in the construction and preparations. Or explain how they managed to get to host a World Cup in the first place.

(In case anyone needs reminding, this piece by Miguel Delaney is excellent: https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/world-cup/qatar-world-cup-2022-deaths-b2244081.html?amp)

As for the event itself, first I guess you have women and gay people being told how they need to behave when they arrive.

Then you have the fan accommodation: tent cities that looked like facking refugee camps. Combination locks on plastic military tentsFor ‘air conditioning’ read ‘office fans’. Bathroom queues like a facking music festival.

https://www.independent.co.uk/travel/news-and-advice/world-cup-qatar-accommodation-fyre-festival-b2226219.html?amp

This despite the fact that although they expected 1.2 million fans for the tournament, there have been tens of thousands of *rooms* free for every single night of the tournament.

Then there’s security taking flags and items of clothing off people without explaining why or applying rules consistently, and refusing journalists access to public areas or to film in certain public areas.

It has also been the most expensive World Cup ever for fans, who (along with Qatari residents) have complained about price gouging, with supermarkets doubling the price of bottled water during the tournament.

Then there’s the complete lockout at venues and in fan zones of non-branded food and drink, which has driven prices up, and the fact that without warning fans, at stadia and in fan zones, FIFA have only been allowing people to pay with Visa (literally - no Mastercard, no Amex, no cash), which has completely facked many people who don’t have a Visa card.

It goes on and on. The football has been great; the organisation, from the point at which the brown envelopes started circulating, has been a crooked nightmare.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I can’t get in my high horse over this due to the fact my own country has been involved in more atrocities worldwide through out history than Qatar has.

We know they shouldn’t have been awarded it in the first place.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Beyond all of that the actual organisation of the event has been a complete shiiiiitshow though.

Fans have been comparing it to Fyre Festival ffs
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Were you actually there in person to confirm all this? Or you basing it all on the crap Independent print and other rubbish the media have been feeding you?

I get the way people are not chuffed with the loss of life building the stadiums. I really do.

But overall I thought the whole thing went quite smoothly once the football started.

Yeah, a load of fans have been lying about their experiences for no reason whatsoever, going as far as to stage video footage of a scruffy giant tent city, replete with floor fans, camp beds, and fake officials.

I don’t disagree in the slightest. It was an excellent wc, but shaded by the loss of lives in building. Also those stating corruption being massive fans of the CL and PL seems to be a touch ironic

I am sure we have seen similar at most major tournaments.

Where I'm at. It goes without saying that how Qatar were awarded the World Cup and the conditions migrant workers worked under were terrible.

But from a purely footballing standpoint, it was an exceptional tournament. Funnily enough, the midseason staging of it meant players were fresher and made for a better tournament imo

Which was what Rosso originally said I think. But the death or hundreds if not thousands of slaves overrides any good that came from the WC.

People shouldn’t die just for our entertainment, especially not the kind of number that did building this WC.

OP

Best world cup in my lifetime was 1970 Brazil v Italy. Football was of a much higher standard. Today was exciting, but the quality was not really there. Half the goals in the actual game were penalties.

I remember '66 as a 9-year-old listening live to the iconic radio commentary for Hurst's last goal. Sat in a traffic jam on our way from Kent to Stratford-on-Avon for a holiday.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I was in the stadium as a 17 year old, so remember it very well.

The football nobody would argue about, I don’t think.

As I have said umpteen times, I was 21 on the day we won it. As it's my only claim to fame, I mention it often.

People shouldn’t die just for our entertainment,

People have been dying for the purposes of entertainment ever since I can remember. People have been dying in the construction industry since construction began.

Yes deaths are sad. But it happens. I wonder how many deaths in Qatar during construction are proportionate to general construction worldwide. They did have to construct a hell of a lot.

posted on 18/12/22

Please show me another event that caused a similar number of deaths? Considering Qatar used slave Labour to construct these stadiums and these people were treated like absolute sh-t I’d imagine far more than anything similar hence why the outrage.

I've enjoyed the tournament. The football has been good.

Also, I know a few people who went over to watch the games. Apart from what happened on the pitch they enjoyed. People were friendly and if you wanted a drink you could have one. Yes, they experienced some delays but nothing worse than over here apparently. They can't speak for everyone of course but that was their experience.

I loved that sky news interview of the Welsh fans after the Iran game:

‘Did you enjoy the win’
‘We lost…’
‘Oh sorry’

‘Hi anything to say about the loss’
‘We were shiiit’
‘Err sorry about that language..’

They totally shut him down.

It wasnt a great final up to 80 mins, then we got some drama. Calling it best ever is typical nonsense we hear these days.

As a whole a decent world cup. A lot of it was a dreadful standard until latter stages of competition.

The added time (rightfully and great idea) after 90 mins made it exciting in some games.

Why would "hundreds" die building stadiums? It's all a ruse!
Hyperthermia kills many including in Arabia including reckless visitors. Workers neglecting health safety gear prone to accidents.
