Boris, the qualification is the same as it was before. It’s just the CL that has extra spots now for the top two ranked leagues.

Daz, any idea if those extra two spots are decided by the single-season coefficient, or are they based on the rolling 5-year ranking?

Right, of course. Silly of me. I just thought that both those countries have been improving their coefficients for a few years, but the penny didn't drop on the fact that in all likelihood they'd still be well behind England.

I hadn’t realised how close they were to Spain, in fact, Italy have overtaken Spain and moved into second, as things stand. Germany are only three points behind them both.

Yeah. Even though Spain's continued to collect trophies, they've also had a lot of early exits in recent years.

Osasuna this season didn't even get past the first EL quali they were drawn into. Betis have been consistently disappointing too.

That's the thing when your coefficient and trophies earn you extra berths but the league is lacking competition in depth, as has been the case in Spain for a few years now.

Five year rankings can also keep a league higher up than it should be. Obviously won’t happen because UEFA are diiiickheads, but I’ve always thought it should be done on a three year ranking. It’s a far better reflection of the league’s performance.

but the flip side is they have loads of winners ... Sevilla have won the europa about 12 times in the last 10 years and Real Madrid sometimes loan the european cup out to other teams now and then.
