Interesting topic this. I think it's quite often a case of having a bicultural background and having lived your life between two different cultures (my case, at any rate).
If I were ever to move back to Blighty (highly unlikely), I'm sure I'd turn my main focus back to Ipswich, but I'd always keep an eye on how Madrid were getting on.
That said, the enjoyment I get from football is very non-tribal nowadays, and has been for decades. I like to keep track of what's going on all over the place.

Yes, Man U were the most successful a few years ago, but times change. At this current time I am more of a city fan. Geography changes your team for you. Time does for me. At the end of the day we are all just football fans.

If I were ever to move back to Blighty (highly unlikely), I'm sure I'd turn my main focus back to Ipswich, but I'd always keep an eye on how Madrid were getting on.
That said, the enjoyment I get from football is very non-tribal nowadays, and has been for decades. I like to keep track of what's going on all over the place.

My issue is more of a temporal one rather than geographic. You say you support the team wherever you are in the world, but for me my team changes based on time rather than location. Yes, Man U were the most successful a few years ago, but times change. At this current time I am more of a city fan. Geography changes your team for you. Time does for me. At the end of the day we are all just football fans.
