Aston Villa v Wolves Match Day Thread

Always been more Wolves fans on here than Villa! I think most of ours are on VillaTalk and a few other club-specific forums.

From a Villa perspective the season has turned around completely since Emery came in, we were probably underdogs in all four of the PL games he's overseen (Man U and Liverpool at home ad Brighton and Spurs away) and he's won three of them and we can now look up rather than down. He's made a huge difference both tactically and mentally and you can see the players are starting to perform to the potential when they were well off it under the previous manager.

This game will be interesting because this will be the first game we come into under Emery as favourites but I personally think Wolves are underperforming and will be dangerous, plus we haven't had a great record against you in recent seasons. That 3-2 home defeat last season after we were 2-0 up still haunts me as it basically ruined our season. I hope we can exact revenge for that.

I like the new manager Wolves have appointed and you have some quality players, but it's clear the issues are lack of goals. You didn't play well against Everton but won, then played decent against United but lost.

I would imagine for us Martinez will come back in goal (despite Olsen's clean sheet last game) and praying Luiz is fit as he has been superb for us this season and is forming a great partnership with Kamara in CM. McGinn might be out too but maybe that gives a chance to Coutinho who looked very good in his 20 min cameo against Spurs and might do well under Emery.

FWIW I think Wolves will be fine and stay up but there is obviously some work to do. Having said that, we need to be looking to catch the teams above us so it is a very important game for us and we are due a good result in a local derby.

Emery has certainly improved Villa, just as I hope Lopetegui will do for Wolves. Both managers have good records in Spain, Lopetegui slightly better than Emery, so I think we can be optimistic. Just a matter of how long it takes to get back on track

With regard to Fosun, my comment was - Certainly can’t complain about lack of investment from Fosun either now or last summer.

Are there other things we can complain about? Of course there are

And my comment was that they took us to the brink through lack of investment before the summer and are now panicking. So I think people can still complain about lack of investment if they had an issue with it as they are trying to close the gate after the horse has already bolted.

Must admit I've been begrudgingly impressed with what Emery has done so far and am hoping Lopetegui has a similar effect on us. Major difference of course is goal threat and Villa have that in buckets compared with us at the moment.

Been the case since Raul's injury to me that goal threat is the issue for us. Always nice to improve any part of the squad but unless we have a front line of players that can all add goals then everything else will have been in vain. Signing Cunha will hopefully prove to be a good start. To me in terms of the next priority in the transfer window, its another striker.

Youngsters Christian Marques, Theo Corbeanu and Lewis Richards were all on season long loans but have all returned to Molineux with injuries. Seems that Richards may be out for the season

I hope the signing of Cunha will prove to be a worthwhile addition, but we've made too many mistakes in the transfer market when it comes to CF's.

Jimenez did well in the 2019-20 season when the likes of Jota, Doherty and even Traore were providing assists. We were also playing a system which suited everyone and had a solid defence.

We seem to have gone downhill since Nuno left and the club has relied too much on one agent, who hasn't come up with decent forwards.

Campana, Bonatini, Fabio and Sasa have all been tried and for various reasons haven't produced the goods. Players are not providing as many assists either and that has to be down to the style of play the club has adopted since Nuno left.

I sincerely hope that Lopetegui can rejuvenate this squad, but until we start finding the net on a more regular basis, I fear the worst this season and that's not something I would have dreamed of at the start of this campaign.

Three of those players were signed by and played under Nuno. The other got injured 20 minutes into his debut. I'm not sure you can claim it was 'since Nuno left'.

would only consider one of those four as premier league ready as well and he lasted 20 mins.

Hadn’t realised that Wolves have one of the worst disciplinary records in the Premier League this season. No team has had more red cards with Collins, Costa and Semedo all getting sent off. Ruben Neves has had more yellow cards than anyone in the league with 7. Thankfully all points get wiped clean in two games time as we arrive at halfway in the season. But we still have problems with Podence and Semedo just one booking away from suspension. If they get booked at Villa they will miss the West Ham game

Try reading this again Tammy.

"Campana, Bonatini, Fabio and Sasa have all been tried and for various reasons haven't produced the goods." What's not true about that statement?

Nothing to do with who was in charge and I never suggested that. Probably add Cutrone to that list too. By the way, Campana never played for us, even for one minute and he's still registered with us until June.

My overall point is, is that we've gone downhill since Nuno left and that's a fact. Switching systems hasn't helped either. Losing Coady, who was such an influence just to switch to a back four, was a bad choice.

Maybe you should start reading what you actually write.

I assume by points you mean bookings? It would be tremendously helpful for them to wipe the points clean and allow us to start again.

I don't think they get wiped completely clean though. It just means there is no suspension for 5 bookings. Neves will still get a suspension if he reaches 10. I think that is cancelled later in the season, but its quite likely Neves will reach it well before then.

Is the suspension more severe for 10 bookings? I think it is or was 3 games. That might be before the 5 booking reset though I guess and it's 1 game after that.

Proper 6 pointer this, I will go 1-1

Proper six pointer this one, with all six going to Wolves in a 1-0 win and Chunha getting on the score sheet. 👍

Rayan Ait Nouri was born in France, has played for the French youth teams, but has an Algerian father. That gives him a choice of what nation he plays for at a senior level and he has decided he will represent Algeria

For a player that doesn't always start for us, it's a no brainer imo.

Thanks for the kudos wolfie 👍

I have found that limiting my offending to weekends has reduced the likelihood of someone running to the mods and crying like a little girl.

Obviously I will need to up my game if I want to be in the running for of the year again. 😂

Is that when they let you out then, at weekends?
