New Goal Keeper Search

Is it just me, or does anyone else think the standard of goalkeeping has dropped off in recent years?

There are some really good ones like Martinez and Ramsdale and I guess Allison and Eddison, but also a lot of distinctively average or poor ones.

We've got Danny Ward who really doesn't inspire much confidence in those in front of him.

Are there any really good up and coming keepers? Seems like there are several teams in the Premier League that would seriously be better with a new keeper, Spurs and Leicester included.

1. Oblak
2. Raya
3. Kelleher

Pope - no chance Newcastle will sell
Pickford - no thanks
Martinez - no thanks, his long range shot stopping is poor

I don’t think it has dropped off. There is more emphasis on GKs using their feet whilst distributing the ball well. Finding a GK that commands the area, has agility, quick reflexes and is comfortable with the ball is the holy grail. There isn’t many out there that tick all them areas. 99% of GKs fall short in one aspect or more.

I like this list. I think Oblak might be out of our reach but would be happy with Raya.

oblak is like what lloris was like at his best - great shot stopper who's shiiit at everything else you want from a keeper now

Perhaps accurate, though I would argue Oblak commands the area better. Particularly from crosses.

"Martinez long range shot stopping is poor" Really? Can't say I noticed that when he helped Argentina to win the World Cup!

Id say Allison and Eddison are as good a goalkeeper as Iv ever seen. the role is changing more and more with each season. and goalkeepers now are of a far higher standard than they ever were IMO.

with almost all GK's their ability with the ball at their feet is night and day compared to what they used to be. They are also far more involved in the build up than once before, id argue they are in a different league to what we used to have

Keepers are having to do much more. Plus pass back rule probably means we focus more on football skills than handling and decision making.

More cameras also means you see all the daft things they do. Keepers of yesterday years could mess up and no one apart from the fans in the stadium would see it.

Obviously he had a very good WC, at times he was phenomenal. He is great at short to mid range shots. But I have seen loads of goals he has conceded that I have thought he should’ve done better there and usually they are at longer range.

Fair enough. As I say I haven't noticed that myself.

I just think we should be treating the GK search as seriously as we would say trying to replace Kane. We need to identify the best keeper and go for him (with the obvious exceptions fo Ederson and Allison). To me Martinez fits the bill, but if it's not him it should be someone else with pedigree. I don't think we can afford to go for a young and upcoming keeper,

Raya, Robert Sanchez, Diogo Costa, Martinez all would be very good signings. Pickford would be ok if those others all got hoovered up but he wouldn't excite me.

Robert Sanchez hasn’t been as good recently. But I wouldn’t be against any of them. Pickford is poor imo, he makes too many errors.

Whoever we end up with, he must be comfortable with the ball at his feet as well as a being commanding shot stopper.

One of our biggest failings is the inability to play out from the back and beat the press, which is why we need better footballing CB`s and the next GK must be good with his feet.

Billy, as if Spurs CBs can play out from the back. None of them are technically good enough.

Raya is home grown too. Bonus.

Martinez would be a great signing for Spurs. 3rd best in the league imo.

I don't think he would go for it though.

Alisson, Ederson, Martinez the best 3.

Pope not far behind this season.

Ramsdale, Sanchez, Raya, Meslier are all good keepers but they don't inspire confidence in me, all do things that make me nervous.

De Gea is a strange one, sometimes class and sometimes dodgy don't know where he fits anymore.

De Gea is Lloris on steroids. Even better shot stopper, potentially even worse ball-player, and the mistakes he makes are even more comical

It would be a risk and I may be biased but if I were a Spurs fan I'd be wanting to take a punt on Kelleher. I've never seen such a calm and composed keeper at his age and he seems to have it all. Shot stopping, penalties, good in the air and even better with his feet. Think he might count as homegrown too because of the years he spent in our academy. I'd be gutted to see him go but he's got one of the best keepers in the world in front of him so I think he'll be off in the summer.

Not a fan of Martinez - just something about nutjob keepers that I don't like. I always feel they lack concentration and have a clanger in them.

Don't know about the standard dropping. I mean in terms of English keepers this is the best it's been at for ages with Pope, Ramsdale and Pickford better than any English keeper we've seen since Seaman, apart from maybe Hart during his good years.

I think the standard of CB has gone down though and possibly this is a reflection of how good keepers look these days?
