Liverpool favourite for top 4

I don’t think last night was indicative of anything in the same way beating a terrible Everton side and 10 man Newcastle wasn’t indicative of anything.

Spurs/Liverpool/Newcastle and I’m still not ruling out Brighton will remain inconsistent between now and the end of the season. Time to find out who is the least flakey

I knew I’d come on here to see Liverpool getting ribbed. I was supporting Liverpool tonight because as funny as it was, we need them distracted in the race for the top four. Now they can focus entirely on it. The result tonight means they’re now firm favourites for top four in my eyes.

Yes but sometimes you have to put logic to one side and enjoy a team you don't particularly like getting a right good doing.

The extra games that beating Sheff.U and Milan will lead to could harm our chances but that's the nice problem that deep cup runs bring.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Problem is Pawl I think Fridge prefers Liverpool over Spurs. He always praises Liverpool, whilst continually carping on about how bad Spurs are.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Morning Sandy, our Milan result (which the media were far too negative about) doesn't look so bad now!!?

The interesting thing will be how Liverpool react to this thrashing, they've got a nasty little game at Palace under the lights on Sat night and CP will have had a clear week.

I shall be watching it down my local with 3 Liverpool fans so let's hope their woes continue.

As Liverpool have 2 games in hand on Spurs they already have more fixtures than Spurs to play before the end of the season. The only way that changes is if we progress in the Cups.

Liverpool properly trashed, oh boy these excuses about an ageing Liverpool side when they got done by 37 year old Modric and 35 year old Benzema, hilarious!

Agreed Sandy. This blind constant free pass that everyone keeps giving this team IS strange. I called it in the other recent "top 4" post, saying I just can't understand why everyone, after beating a really poor Everton and 10 man Newcastle who are running out of steam anyway, are back to the team we all saw over the last couple of years.....they are not, simple as. Dodgy defence, aging midfield and not even one of the top 3 attacks in the PL.
Thought it hilarious the free pass the pundits gave them last night, including the host asking them "well, can they do it in the second leg ?? Crouch looked at him like "what the fack is this bloke talking about"
Then there is McNulty today giving them a relatively easy match report. I can remember the damning report he gave Spurs after being beaten 2-4 by Bacca. The Bacca in their prime. Going as far as saying Spurs shouldn't be in the CL.
Yeah, the whole thing is very strange.

Not so strange when you think that in terms of media influence, in sales and content, Liverpool probably are ahead of most teams.
These "pundits" drool over the best sides, because those sides have a nasty PR teams that will ripped them to shreds like Madrid did to Liverpool, sorry Liverpool fans

It's all "try" to be controversial but don't bite the hands that feed you

In all seriousness, this is probably the reality check that some LFC fans needed.

They have had issues this season otherwise they wouldnt be mid table and being comfortably beaten by the likes of Wolves BHA Brentford. Those issues are more than just "LFC aint firing yet" because they having to chop and change in midfield to try and find a balance, their defence is being repeatedly exposed, and their attacking lineup is far from settled and a mile away from the well-oiled machine of previous seasons.

For these reasons it has never, in my mind, been a given that LFC can just click back into winning form and beating a crap Everton at Anfield (which they always do) and NUFC who actually matched LFC even with 10 men, did not convince me otherwise. Yes it is possible but i dont think when there are so many issues - form, injury, individual errors, lack of balance, players not at their peak - that it will be that easy.

Real Madrid highlighted so many of their issues last night and not least their Boom or Bust tactics. As Owen said at half time, when it works boy does it work but it is high risk and when they get caught out, it is often costly, especially when they aint in great form.

I mentioned the other day on here that LFCs strength in previous seasons was their utter confidence and the oppositions fear. Sometimes it seemed LFC had won the game before they'd even stepped on the pitch. Now their weaknesses are being laid bare and teams are far less fearful of attacking these and LFCs confidence looks fragile.

This result may galvanise them, it may give them focus, a re-set. But it will also, without fail, do nothing to improve their confidence. Will be interesting to see if the mentality monsters still have it or not and if they do then fair play to them.

From a Spurs point of view i hope we make it a challenge for them, dont just make it easy for them with poor results but really make them beat us and not hand it to them. If we do that and LFC surpass us to 4th them well done them. Right now, it is not a given that either team will go on a mental winning run, but Spurs are just as well placed to do so and should, IMO, be favourites for top 4 ahead of LFC and Newcastle.

Liverpool will drop plenty if points, but so will we. I think the Newcastle bubble has burst so am not too concerned about them.

Think something like 65 points provably gets 4th.

Nearly 400m their starting line up costed last night. And they got rinsed. Hoping they dwell and mess up at Palace now! Top 4 wrangle will be good. And it will also be nice to see the same fans that were dismissive of how hard it can be to get a CL spot, have all their excuses ready come May of Liverpool do miss out!
